Isolation of DNA
DNA is the chemical name for the molecule that carries genetic instructions in all living
things. The DNA molecule consists of two strands that wind around one another to form a
shape known as a double helix. Each strand has a backbone made of alternating sugar
(deoxyribose) and phosphate groups.
DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is the hereditary material in humans and almost all other
organisms. Nearly every cell in a person's body has the same DNA. ... The information in DNA is
stored as a code made up of four chemical bases: adenine (A), guanine (G), cytosine (C), and
thymine (T).
DNA is pivotal to our growth, reproduction, and health. It contains the instructions
necessary for your cells to produce proteins that affect many different processes and functions
in your body. Because DNA is so important, damage or mutations can sometimes contribute to
the development of disease.
