CONCEPT PAPER
3rd Semester/Summer, AY 2019

Concept No. :1
General Subject Area : Electrical Engineering
Specific Area of Interest : development and design of Harmonic Sensing and Shut-off device

I. Introduction

Nowadays, electronic devices, motors, generators and other equipment are dominant and wildly used. It
helps our daily lives to make it more convenient and easier. Our generation is dependent on these technologies.
These technologies are relying in electricity to function, that is why it must be utilize properly and some phenomenon
and electrical behavior must be considered.
Electrical behavior just like skin effect, power factor, harmonics and many others play a certain effect in
electrical system and needed to be considered. Otherwise, may cause damages or unwanted event in the system or
to the people who use it. In terms of those phenomenon, safety is widely affected and needed to be prioritize.
Improper use of electricity and neglection of electrical phenomenon may cause fatalities and lost for the user.
Harmonics is one of an electrical phenomenon that is neglected in a power system by most engineers and
electrical practitioners. Harmonics is the current or voltage at multiple of the fundamental frequency of the system. It
is produced by loads that are non-linear in behavior such as electronic devices. A load is considered to be non-linear
if the current it produces doesn’t match with its supplied voltage. Harmonics causes additional losses, overheating
and over loading. It also causes telecommunication interference in lines and also power metering.

II. Significance/ Purpose

The purpose and significance of this study will be focusing on the safety for us since we wildly utilize
electrical energy in our daily lives. Even though we already have a lot of electrical safety devices, we still have to
come up with new devices that can protect us from unexpected electrical phenomenon since our generation changes
and a lot things are going out. One of these are electronic devices and electrical equipment that produces
harmonics.
In other words, this study will come up with a device that will protect us from the effect of harmonics in the
power system as well in our safety since we utilize electricity a lot.
III. Project Description
A. Objectives
a.) To develop a Harmonic Sensing and Shut-off device that focuses on the effect of Harmonics on a Power
System.
b.) To detect certain amount of harmonics
c.) To shut-off power system when the harmonics exceed the set limit.
d.) To protect the people from effect of harmonics.

C. Expected Output
After this project the researchers expect to have a device which senses a certain
amount of harmonics in a certain power system, and shut off the said power system if the amount
or level of harmonics exceed the limit that is set. This device will help to protect people since we
widely use electricity.
