Quick Start Guide

This guide is intended to get you started with a base configuration for Rational Developer for System z Unit
Test.

Product overview
Rational Developer for System z Unit Test (Unit Test) is an add-on feature to Rational Developer for System z with Java, Rational
Developer for System z with EGL, or Rational Developer for zEnterprise. The Unit Test component provides a small-scale,
personal development and test environment founded on the IBM® System z® Personal Development Tool. This software runs on
an Intel or Intel-compatible (x86) Linux server. Additional software is also included in the feature to further your ability to match
your existing System z host application environment. The Unit Test feature creates a portable and flexible option for local
development and test of applications that will eventually run on your existing IBM System z mainframe.
You are responsible for obtaining proper proof of entitlement for Unit Test prior to its installation.

Important: The Rational Developer for System z Unit Test USB Hardware Key is a license key that is required to run Rational
Developer for System z Unit Test. For additional information on the Unit Test Hardware Key, see the Rational
Developer for System z Unit Test USB Hardware Key Quick Start Guide (GI11-9147-01).

Note: This Program is licensed only for development, test, demonstration, and education of licensees applications that run on
IBM z/OS®. The Program may not be used to run production workloads of any kind, nor more robust development
workloads including without limitation production module builds, pre-production testing, stress testing, or performance
testing.

1 Step 1: Access the software and documentation

This product offering includes:
v Rational Developer for System z Unit Test Quick Start Disc
v Rational Developer for System z Unit Test Discs 1 thru 8

2 Step 2: Evaluate the hardware and system configuration

Unit Test requires Rational Developer for System z with EGL, Rational Developer for System z with Java, or Rational
Developer for zEnterprise. For complete installation and configuration instructions for Rational Developer for System z,
see the Rational Developer for System z Quick Start Guide (GI11-8300-05). For complete installation and configuration
instructions for Rational Developer for zEnterprise, see the Rational Developer for zEnterprise Quick Start Guide

 3 Step 3: Install Rational Developer for System z Unit Test
To install the Unit Test base driver, follow the instruction provided in the Redbook System z Personal Development Tool:
Volume 2 Installation and Basic Usage (SG24-7722) (version 4 or later).
After you have installed the Unit Test base driver, see the Rational Developer for System z Unit Test Installation and
Configuration Guide (SC14-7281-02) for instructions on configuring Unit Test.
To run the Unit Test feature, you must first obtain a unique license key file for each USB Hardware Key in your order. For
additional information on obtaining a license key file, see the Developer for System z Unit Test activation process on the
IBM Rational® Developer for System z Unit Test Hub on developerWorks® (https://www.ibm.com/developerworks/
mydeveloperworks/groups/service/html/communityview?communityUuid=5d4610cf-76f1-46d9-806f-88f157367222).
Once you obtain the license key file for the associated USB Key, follow the instructions found in the System z Personal
Development Tool: Volume 2 Installation and Basic Usage (SG24-7722) (version 4 or later) for running the
SecureUpdateUtility -u command.
The Unit Test Redbooks® and the Rational Developer for System z Unit Test Installation and Configuration Guide (SC14-7281-02)
are located in the documentation directory on the Rational Developer for System z Unit Test Quick Start Disc.
