PROJECT MIMs Grade 8

G8 MIMs # 4 – WEEK 1 – 1st QUARTER

FACTORING PERFECT SQUARE TRINOMIALS

LEARNING COMPETENCY: Factor completely different types of polynomials

(polynomials with common monomial factors, difference of two squares, sum and
difference of two cubes, perfect square trinomials, and general trinomials).

OBJECTIVE: Factor perfect square trinomials

Squaring a binomial creates a perfect square trinomial

( a+ b )2=a 2+ 2ab+ b2

( a−b )2 =a2−2 ab+ b2

Reversing the process by factoring

2 2 2
a +2 ab+ b =( a+ b )

a=square root of a2

b=square root of b 2
middle sign is positive

2 2 2
a −2 ab+b =( a−b )

a=square root of a2

b=square root of b 2
middle sign isnegative

Examples
1. Factor x 2−8 x +16

2. Factor x 2+ 10 x +25

4. Factor 4 x2 +12 x+ 9
( 2 x+3 )2

5. Factor 25 x 2+ 90 x +81
