The Life of Jose Rizal

Melvin B. de la Raga BSHRM-3

I have come to know about Jose Rizal since I was just a young boy in primary school. Every
parent would have taught their child who the national hero was. As a student, I never had an
interest in Rizal other than another name to be memorized just in case his name happens to be an
answer in one of the examination questions. Rizal as a subject in my study helps me know more
about him and his great love for our country.

The segment in the life of Jose Rizal that make me know and realize that the love of the
something that cannot just be disregarded is when Rizal and his family lived happily in Hong
Kong but he chose to go back in the Philippines. This decision made Rizal to sacrifice a peaceful
living with his family in exchange of showing his love for his country and to continue his fight
against the abuse of the Spanish government in the Philippines. Rizal wanted that every Filipino
would have a peaceful life and equal rights.

Rizal saw our strongly limited, selfish concerns. He saw our lack of social concern. He saw our
opportunistic tendencies He saw knowledge and understanding of the sociopolitical milieu used
for self-aggrandizement and self-preservation rather than social transformation. In this piece if
we change the speculating Rizal with ourselves, the so-called educated, if we change the friars
with the ruling elite in government, business, military, etc., we will still see his thoughts
reflecting us native Filipinos of today and our future.

Rizal makes him great to every Filipino because of what he has done for our country. He
sacrificed his simple life so that we will get the life we have today. He did not think just for
himself but think for us. I observed from the life of Rizal was his calmness and ability to think
rationally even in the most complicated circumstances. His advocacy of Philippine Independence
is by legal and peaceful way that is why he wrote many books in order to fire-up the
revolutionary spirit of the Filipinos.
