Hello everyone. Today, I will lecture on substitution.

Continuing on from the previous lecture, I will continue our lecture on substitution. We will
first read John chapter 1 verse 29. John chapter 1 verse 29 is a word we all know very well.
“The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which
taketh away the sin of the world.”

The great message of Christ saving us by dying was shown to us in the New Testament. In
the previous lecture, we talked about how “without shedding of blood there is no remission”
is the greatest message shown to us by the Old Testament. Through all the sin offerings in
the Old Testament, the greatest message God is showing us is that sin is forgiven through
shedding of blood. So, the proof of the entire New Testament is that Jesus Christ saves us
through his death and through the shedding of blood. If we look in John chapter 1 verse 29,
“The Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world.”What did John the Baptist
describe Jesus as? “The Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world.”That is how he
described him. This is one of the most important parts. We will look for several more verses.

Let’s open to 1Corinthians chapter 5 verse 7. Here is the Lamb of God. John the Baptist
described the Old Testament sin offering as Jesus the Lamb of God. This was connected to
the Old Testament and John the Baptist is speaking of it strongly. “The Lamb of God which
takethaway the sin of the world.” The greatest message of the Old Testament, “without the
shedding of blood there is no remission”, was connected to the New Testament and he is
speaking of it. Let’s look at 1Corinthians chapter 5 verse 7. It’s 1Corinthians chapter 5 verse
7, “Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened.
For even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.”“For even Christ our Passover is sacrificed
for us.”Here in 1Corinthians chapter 5 verse 7, it said, “Our Passover.”In chapter 5 verse 7,
“Our Passover.” He’s the Passover lamb. Who’s the Passover lamb? He’s Jesus Christ. “For
even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us.”That’s how it was described.“Christ is sacrificed
for us.” As we look in the Bible one by one, Jesus is the sin offering. Every sacrificial offering
in the Old Testament is pointing and connected to Jesus Christ. We are able to see that
clearly in the New Testament.

During this time we are going to search a lot in the Bible to look at these parts. Many words
in the New Testament are speaking of Jesus Christ as the lamb in charge of the atonement
like the sin offering, lamb of the Old Testament, and Passover lamb. It’s Romans chapter 3
verse 25. As we look at these things one by one, we will look at how the many things in the
New Testament are saying the lamb and offerings of the Old Testament sin offering are
indicating Jesus. It’s Romans chapter 3 verse 25, “Whom God hath set forth to be a
propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins
that are past, through the forbearance of God.”If you look here, it says, “Set forth to be a
propitiation through faith in his blood.”What we need to pay attention here is “set forth to
be a propitiation”. It’s the propitiation. Jesus Christ became the sin offering to save us
through his death. We are looking into the words on how he saved us. As we look at those
evidences one by one through the New Testament, we can know how the many parts are
speaking on the atonement of Jesus Christ.

Jesus was set as the propitiation. We just said the purpose of all the offerings is
reconciliation, right? Reconciling with God. The Bible is saying that Jesus was set as the
propitiation to make reconciliation. Let’s turn the page to Romans chapter 5 verse 6. It’s
Romans chapter 5 verse 6, “For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died
for the ungodly.”“For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the
ungodly.” That’s what it says. When we were without strength, he died for the ungodly.
Verse 10 speaks of this in more detail. “For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to
God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.”So,
we became enemies; we’re enemies. It says here, “When we were enemies.” We were
enemies with God. To recover from being enemies, to reconcile with Him, a propitiation is
necessary, right? So, Jesus Christ came to make reconciliation. He became the propitiation.
He became the sin offering. In many places in the Bible it speaks of these parts that it was by
the death of the Son of God. “We were reconciled to God by the death of his Son.”So, it’s
saying all the offerings of the Old Testament, the death of Jesus Christ in the New Testament
is reconciling with God and in reconciling with God, the death of Jesus Christ the propitiation
is absolutely necessary.

Let’s look in Galatians. Galatians speaks of this part. It’s Galatians chapter 1 verse 4, “Who
gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to
the will of God and our Father.”How clear and precise is it telling us? “Who gave himself for
our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of our
Father.”For our sins, in other words, for my sins, Jesus gave himself as the sin offering. By
putting the punishment of sin on the animal, the sin was forgiven in the Old Testament,
reconciliation with God is made, and the position is changed to the relationship of receiving
blessing with God. Likewise, he gave himself for our sins. It was clearly expressed like this.

Next, we will turn to Ephesians. If we also look in Ephesians, it’s Ephesians chapter 1.
Ephesians chapter 1 verse 7, “In whom we have redemption through his blood, the
forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.”It clearly says, “In whom we have
redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins.”“In whom we have redemption
through his blood, the forgiveness of sins.” That is what the Bible clearly says.Next is
Ephesians chapter 2 verse 13, “But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are
made nigh by the blood of Christ.”“Made nigh by the blood of Christ.”This is clearly speaking
of these parts. “Made nigh by the blood of Christ.”“Made nigh by the blood of Christ.”When
we say “blood of Christ”, what is the significance of this? It means life was thrown away; life
was thrown away. Yes, blood is life. Life was thrown away. The life of Jesus Christ was thrown
away. By throwing away his life, reconciliation was made between God and us.“Was made
nigh.”This means reconciliation was made. As life was thrown away, God and we became
close; we were reconciled. That is why it says in Ephesians chapter 2 verse 13, “But now in
Christ Jesus, ye were enemies with God and sometimes were far off, are made nigh by the
blood of Christ as the life of Christ was thrown away.” In other words, this means that
reconciliation was made. So, can reconciliation be made with any action of ours?
Reconciliation can’t be made with any of our actions. Reconciliation can only be made
through the blood of Jesus Christ. For us to reconcile with God, none of our efforts or good
deeds are necessary. What we need is faith in the blood of Jesus Christ. We reconcile with
God and become close to Him through faith in the blood of Jesus Christ. It’s because
reconciliation is made and we become close through all the offeringsin the Old Testament. A
perfect sin offering was made. So, the only way for us to reconcile with God is the blood of
Jesus Christ.

Why don’t we take a more detailed look at this? It’s Hebrews, Hebrews chapter 9 is a great
and amazing word. Hebrews chapter 9 verse 12 is a word we know very well. Why don’t we
take a look? It’s Hebrews chapter 9 verse 12. Let’s read Hebrews chapter 9 verse 12,“Neither
by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy
place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.”“Neither by the blood of goats and
calves.” Why not through that blood? That’s the Old Testament offering. Eternal redemption
was made through the blood of Jesus Christ in the New Testament. “Neither by the blood of
goats and calves.” Why? This is how perfect redemption is accomplished. The offering came.
Eternal redemption was accomplished through the blood of Jesus Christ. “He entered once
into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption.”For us, it’s the same here as
well;his blood. This means he threw away his life. By throwing away his life, eternal
redemption was accomplished. He obtained eternal redemption. This is a wonderful
message.

Next, let’s look at Hebrews chapter 9 verse 14. We’ll read verse 14. “How much more shall
the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God,
purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”Just as an animal without
blemish was offered, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal
Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve
the living God? When it said “blood of Christ” here, it means a life died, a life was thrown
away. So, the living God was made to be served. The blood of Christ purged the conscience
from dead works; second, the living God was made to be served. All the condition for us to
serve God was not in anything of us, but in the blood of Christ. We are able to serve God
through the blood of Christ. Why couldn’t we serve God, the living God?The blood of Jesus
Christ cleansed us from everything. It made us able to serve the living God. Many times we
think that we can’t serve God because of our actions. But the Bible is telling us that
everything was accomplished for us to serve God through the blood of Jesus Christ.

Next, we will turn to Hebrews chapter 10 and look at these things in Hebrews. It’s Hebrews
chapter 10 verse 10. Hebrews chapter 10 verse 10, “By the which will we are sanctified
through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”“By the which will we are
sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”Being sanctified or us
serving God, God said that it’s not in us. We are sanctified through the offering of the body
of Jesus Christ once for all. We are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ
once for all. So, us being sanctified or us serving God, all of these things are not in us. It’s
possible by offering the body of Christ and through the blood of Christ. That is why without
the shedding of blood there is no remission. If there is no remission, how can sin be washed
and one become holy? It’s saying that all of these things are done by the blood of Jesus
Christ. The same goes for verse 12. Chapter 10 verse 12, “But this man, after he had offered
one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God.”Jesus Christ offered one
sacrifice for sins forever. By offering a sacrifice forever, what can we do about sin? We can be
free from it. Verse 14 is also the same. “For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them
that are sanctified.”This is actually an amazing word. “For by one offering he hath perfected
for ever,” it says “one offering” here, right? “Them that are sanctified.”In verse 12, “But this
man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever.” One sacrifice and one offering are
speaking of Jesus Christ. Sanctified and perfected forever. We were perfected forever
through Jesus Christ. This is truly an amazing word – perfected forever.

We will turn a couple more pages and look at 1Peter chapter 1. Through 1Peter chapter 1
verses 18 and 19, we are looking in the New Testament at the many things in the Bible how
sin is washed through Jesus Christ. Chapter 1 verses 18 and 19, “Forasmuch as ye know that
ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain
conversation received by tradition from your fathers;” Verse 19, “But with the precious
blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot.”The Bible is teaching us
through various things on the washing of sin through the Old Testament sin offering and the
atonement of Jesus that is connected to that. “But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a
lamb without blemish and without spot.”“But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb
without blemish and without spot.”

Next, let’s look at 1Peter chapter 3 verse18. Let’s look at 1Peter chapter 3 verse 18. Chapter
3 verse 18, “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might
bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit.”Another thing
among the very important things is “for”. He substituted. “He hath once suffered for sins,
the just for the unjust.” Why? “To bring us to God.” This is a very important part. For Jesus
Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just,” It said, “just”, right? “The just for the
unjust.” Why? “That he might bring us to God.”To bring us to God to reconcile with God and
receive blessings from God.The righteous Jesus died for the unjust. Through his death, by
dying for them, he wanted to bring us to God.

Next, we will take a look in 2Peter. 2Peter chapter 2 verse 1, “But there were false prophets
also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall
bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon
themselves swift destruction.”It said that false prophets and false teachers will be among
them. Heresies will be brought in to deny the Lord that bought them. That is why we are
looking at this Word one by one in the Bible. We are looking through the Bible how biblically
precise the death of Jesus Christ is and how clearly the Bible is teaching this to us.

Next, let’s turn a few pages to 1John. It’s 1John. Let’s look at 1John chapter 1 verse 7. It’s a
word we all know. 1John chapter 1 verse 7, “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light,
we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us
from all sin.”“The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.”It’s for us to have
fellowship. In verse 7, it said, “We have fellowship.”That fellowship is possible from the
blood of His Son, Jesus Christ, by having all our sins cleansed by the blood of Jesus. The
blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin.

In Revelation chapter 1 verse 5, we will take a look in Revelation. Revelation chapter 1 verse
5, “And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and
the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in
his own blood.”It said, “Washed us from our sins in his own blood.”It’s telling us that the
blood of Jesus Christ frees us from sin.

So, through all the words in the Bible that we have found in the above, the atonement on
the cross where Jesus Christ redeemed us is the redemption, right? Jesus went through the
redemptive and punishable affliction. Next, Jesus bore the responsibility for sin and received
punishment for the redemptive offense. So, what continually comes out in the Bible words
we read? The words on “blood”, right? Blood continually appears. There was no word where
this “blood” didn’t come up. It always came up, right? The blood of Jesus Christ is very
amazing. This word “blood” is repeated because there is no remission without blood. There
is no redemption. That is why the word “blood”continually comes up. Redemption,
remission is through the blood. Redemption, remission is through the blood. Our salvation,
redemption is through the precious blood of Christ. Leviticus chapter 17 verse 11 says that
blood is life. Our redemption and receiving salvation is through the precious blood of Christ.
He poured out his life. That blood is life. It was accomplished by pouring out his life. All our
redemption and salvation is accomplished through Christ shedding his precious blood and
pouring out his life. We can say that it’s guaranteed.

Next is ransom. I will briefly talk about ransom and wrap it up. The ransom is in Matthew
chapter 20. It’s Matthew chapter 20 verse 28. Matthew chapter 20 verse 28, “Even as the
Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for
many.”“To give a ransom.” When the Bible speaks of ransom, it said that Jesus gave his life a
ransom for many. That’s how it was described. Why don’t we look into the ransom a little bit
more? It’s 1Timothy chapter 2. 1Timothy chapter 2 verses 5 and 6, “For there is one God,
and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom
for all, to be testified in due time.”Here in verse 6, “Gave himself a ransom.” If you look at
the ransom here and the ransom in Matthew chapter 20 verse 28, it’s the same if you look at
it in the English version of the Bible. Is that right? The same word “ransom”is used in both
places. It’s telling us that it holds such significance. What we need to look here is the
ransom. He gave himself a ransom. If we look next in 1Timothy chapter 2 verses 5 and 6, the
ransom here is used under the same meaning.

Let’s this set in order, this ransom. There is a possession another person has, a possession a
person has. For example, something that is paid in substitute to free a person or object is
called a ransom. When there was slavery in the US a long time ago, there was money that
was paid to free a person that was possessed by paying money. The money that was paid to
free a certain animal, object, or person was called ransom. So, through the death of Christ,
we who were trapped in sin were freed through the death of Jesus Christ. Paying the price in
our place to free us from our restraints is called ransom. Christ broke away the yoke of sin
we were trapped in through his death and freed us. Christ paid the price. That price was the
precious blood and that is the ransom. Do you understand that? Christ paid the price of sin.
By paying the price, we who were trapped and bound to sin were freed. That is the meaning
of ransom.

Some people say that ransom is paying the price of sin to the devil, but that’s not what it
means because there is no reason to pay the price of sin to the devil. The devil doesn’t have
that right and doesn’t have anything to do that. Did anyone ever give the devil that right?
The price of sin was not paid to the devil. We were trapped in sin, but as Christ paid the
price of sin, that price was the precious blood. The price of sin was paid with that precious
blood and we were cleansed. So, if we look in 1Corinthians, we will be looking at this in
more detail next time, but the Bible said it was bought with a price. God bought us with a
price. For us who are trapped in sin, the price of sin is the precious blood. The price of our
sin was paid with the precious blood and we were bought, we who left God and were distant
from God. However, if we misunderstand the part of buying with the price of sin, this is not
saying the price of sin was paid to the devil. We who are distant from God due to sin can be
free through the ransom, by paying the price. That is why it’s saying the price of sin must be
paid. During this time, we saw the many things God spoke on through the substitution.

I will end here. Goodbye.
