"The Lottery" by Shirley Jackson

(Summary)

The lottery by Shirley Jackson is a fictional story about one village doing thier traditions. Every 26th of
June people of the village gathering in one place at 10:00 of the morning and brings a different kind of
stones. Box contains many piece of paper inside is placed at the middle of people gathered in village,
one paper is marked with black dot and the rest of the paper is clean. Each family has one
representative which he/she the one who will draw the paper in the box. This tradition usually held in 2
days in big villages, but in this village who has only more than 300 people, the tradition finished in just
one day.

The tradition of the village has began, the head of village starts calling each representative of the
families and draw thier paper, after it draw the paper should remain folded untill every representatives
draw thier paper. While calling each representative, one of them realized that his doing this tradition
more than 70 years. After every representative draw thier paper they will open it simultaneously. And
one of the representative got the paper with a mark of black dot named Bill. The head asked him a
question, how many family members he have. The representative answered that he has a total of 5
family members. The head puts a 5 piece of papers inside the box including the paper with black dot.
Each of Bill's family needs to draw again in the box, after they draw, the 3 children of Bill shows thier
clean paper at the crowd. After that Bill's open his paper and its clean, so the only paper left is in his wife
named Tessie, the first 4 open paper is clean. When the head asked him to open her paper and show it
to crowd, Tessie scared and Bill's opened it, and that paper is the one with a black dot mark. After that
the head of village commands the people to finish it quickly. Every people in village picked up the stone
that gathered earlier and start throwing it to Tessie untill she die.
