ELECTRICAL ROUGHING-IN

What is Electrical Roughing-In?

 When a home is built, an addition added after or during a major construction is a rough in phase
for different utilities such as electricity, water, etc.
 It is the time when access to the spaces of the floor, wall, or ceiling can be easily accessed and
thus, installing conduits/pipes, panels, and electrical boxes can be installed with ease.
 Rough-in refers to the rough installation of the electrical wiring, boxes, fixture mounts, breaker
panel, and sub panels.
 The installation of switches, outlets, fixtures, and so on is NOT included during the Rough-in
phase because it is done during the finishing phase of the construction.
 In order to perform Roughing-In activities, certain skill set is required such as the fundamental
knowledge and skill the following;
o Electrical tools, materials and equipment – to be able to determine the correct tools,
materials, and equipment to be used while performing roughing-in activities.
o Electrical symbols – in order to interpret electrical plans that will serve as a guide in the
roughing-in activity.
 This lesson will cover the basics of the tools, materials, and equipment used in electrical
installation, these topics were already discussed in EIM exploratory course but a quick recap is
required for you to refresh your memory and prepare you to other tools, materials, and
equipment to be discussed as we go along the roughing-in topic.
 Working with electricity or any electrical installation work requires basic understanding with the
common tools and materials as well as safety precautions to ensure that your work can be
finished correctly and safely.
 Basically, Electrical tools are hand implements which serves as an extension of the hand and
powered by manual labor which adds speed, power and accuracy in any electrical works. On the
other hand, electrical materials are developed and constructed for a special purpose or function.
 When you pursue electrical installation and maintenance specialization or career, you will
encounter these common tools along with other tools depending on the job specifications.
 This lesson covers the common electrical tools and materials along with their purpose or
function, illustrations are provided to help you familiarize with them.
 Always observe safety in handling or manipulating any tools in order to ensure safe workplace
and avoid accidents. Whenever you are not sure on what to do or how to do things using any
tools, communicate with your teacher or any competent adult to guide and assist you while
doing your assigned task.
 The following are the most common electrical tools and devices that you may encounter in the
electrical installation and maintenance exploratory course.
