1. India Engineering Admission Scenario (NRI Quota)

Every year thousands of Indian NRI parents and students look

towards India for engineering admission in various prestigious
colleges across the nation.
Of course for the best of engineering colleges in India like IITs, one
needs to prove and need to stay at the same competition level as
Indian students.
But, talented NRI students are given preferences in many
Engineering Colleges in India under the scheme called DASA /
CIWG Scheme. Ministry of Human Resource & Development
initiated this scheme for engineering aspirants.
This scheme is popularly known as “NRI Quota” amongst the NRIs
in the Middle East & other parts of the world.

3 Options For NRI Students – For Engineering Admission In India

A. Priority 1 – Admission in IITs in India
B. Priority 2 – Admission in CFTIs in India (NITs, IIITs & Other 54
Institutions)
C. Priority 3 – Admission in State Engineering Colleges
We have tried to explain things around these topics in this
booklet. Hope all of your doubts will be cleared.

2. About DASA / CIWG Scheme
DASA Scheme:
Stands for (Direct Admission Student Abroad) – This scheme also
known as NRI Quota for admission in Indian Engineering Colleges,
primarily which comes under CFTIs (Centrally Funded Institution)
category in India.
NRIs / OCIs & PIOs across the world can apply under DASA
Scheme and avail admission in CFTI engineering colleges in India.

CIWG Scheme:
Stands for (Children of Indian Workers In Gulf) – This scheme is a
sub set of DASA. It’s not a separate scheme. But, this comes with
some added advantages for NRI students from Middle Eastern
countries like Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Kuwait,
Qatar & Bahrain.
This scheme can only be availed by NRI students from Middle East
for admission in Indian Engineering Colleges.
CIWG Scheme can help NRI Students getting admission in
engineering colleges in India (CFTIs) Centrally funded institution in
India.
There are approximately 54 prime engineering colleges including
NITs. More details are given below.

3. Difference Between DASA / CIWG Scheme
DASA & CIWG are not much different in nature, only point is that
CIWG is a category in the DASA scheme itself and only meant for
NRIs in Gulf Countries. No other student around the world can
apply under the CIWG category, but NRI students in the Gulf can
apply for both CIWG & DASA options.

4. NRIs Eligibility For DASA / CIWG
Of course to get admission in CFTIs or engineering colleges like
NITs, IIITs, DTU & NSIT etc. (List Below) You now need to clear the
JEE Main paper (Previously SAT). But, to take admission into these
colleges being an NRI student you also need to be eligible for
DASA / CIWG quota.

If you are not eligible for DASA / CIWG quota then you need to
write paper as a general Indian student and you need to compete
with Indian students in JEE Main with their cutoff marks and
privileges under DASA / CIWG cannot be taken.

IMPORTANT: When you appear from DASA / CIWG category for

JEE Main, your cutoff is separate from Indian students which is
relatively high.

TARGET 2: If your Target is “2” then you can take admission in

below mentioned (54 Premiere Engineering) Colleges by writing
just JEE Main through DASA / CIWG quota with lower fee.
Competition is moderate here.

TARGET 3: If your Target is “3” then you can simply write any
state board Engineering Entrance Test or write JEE Main.
Either of the score will help you in getting admission in regional

7. Fee Payable Under DASA / CIWG Scheme
Typically when you get admission in India in any of the
engineering colleges, being an NRI student you need to pay a little
higher than Indian students.
But, when you apply through CIWG scheme, you actually pay less
than what Indian student pays for the same seat.
This is because of the fact that NRI students from Gulf are given
concession for admission in India under CIWG scheme.

entrance exam for B.Arch admissions in various institutions in the
country offering this 5-year undergraduate programme in
Architecture. NATA is conducted twice every year, usually during
the months of April and May.
NATA is a gateway exam for the vacant B.Arch seats in various
premier institutes in India but the decision regarding final

9. JEE Exam Centers in Abroad & India

After noticing the growth of foreign students in engineering

colleges in India (IITs, CFTIs, NITs...SPA etc), the more
opportunities have been given to the NRIs.
For this, JEE centers have opened in foreign countries so that
students who reside in foreign can give their JEE main exam
easily.
NTA has a total of 9 exam cities outside India. The complete list of
all JEE Main exam centres outside India is given below.

10. Exam Application Procedure
Every year one of the NITs takes initiative to process the DASA /
CIWG scheme for NRI students. Last year NITK, Surathkal, has
processed the DASA application form submission process at
dasanit.org.
DASA form submission can only be done online and usually the
last date is in the last week of March or April.
Foreign nationals and NRIs can fill out the DASA application form
for admission to UG engineering and architecture courses at NITs,
IIITs, SPAs and other participating institutions.

Important

A) Students who wish to target under DASA / CIWG – They need

to fill the JEE Main application also and at the same time they
need to submit an application for DASA / CIWG too.

Approx. 2000 seats are reserved for DASA category students and
1000 is reserved only for CIWG candidates in all CFTIs. These are
the total number of available seats and not as per college.

13. Score Needed For DASA / CIWG Selection

To be able to get admission in above CFTIs, you need to score well

and compete with other NRI students to secure a seat.

Until last year when SAT was there typically 1800 marks were
needed out of 2400 marks paper to be even eligible for DASA /
CIWG scheme. But, good college and rank can only be achieved
around 2250+ marks out of 2400.
SAT was supposed to be easier, many students could get a perfect
SAT score, which is 2400 / 2400.

Problem Now:
Since SAT is not there anymore and this year 2020 many students
gave their first attempt of JEE Main for DASA / CIWG. Official
cutoff is yet to be released and seen.
But our guess is around 140 marks out of 400 in JEE Main should
definitely be there for DASA / CIWG students.
