On the annual day of love, known across most of the world as Valentine’s Day, traditions
are fairly straight forward .Whenever February 14 comes around, chocolates, flowers or other
gifts are often exchanged to show affection. However, in some parts of the world, the event is
celebrated with slightly different twists-some even celebrate a lack of love.
Here are some of the most interesting Valentine’s Day traditions from three different
countries.
Argentina
One day is nowhere near enough for the passionate Argentinians – they also devote an additional
entire week in July to the festival of love, calling it ‘Sweetness Week’. Between July 13 to 20,
lovers exchange kisses for candy, and finish up the week of celebrations with a friendship Day
as well.
France
Finding love can be a lottery, and no one knows this better than the French! Une loterie d’amour
– a surprisingly unromantic custom from the country of love- saw hopeful singles line up in
houses facing each other and call through the windows until they eventually paired up. Those
women left partner – less built a large bonfire ceremoniously burning images of the men who
rejected them whilst hurling insults into the sky. Sadly after things started getting a little unruly,
the French government decided to ban the practice altogether.
Japan
While in most parts of the world, men are typically expected to give presents to women on
February 14, in Japan the reverse occurs. On Valentine’s Day, women – both single and
attached- give out giri choco (chocolates) to male partners, friends or colleagues. These are
considered obligatory gifts, and do not carry any romantic meanings. However, if women want
to show their love, then a had –made or costlier gift with a box of chocolates are given- also
known as honmei Chocó. Thereafter on march 14, men will reciprocate by giving women a gift
that’s a white- white chocolate, marshmallows, cookies and such .Hence, the day is known as
white Day.
