Word of God
(Galatians 5:1, 13)
St. Paul founded the church in Galatia, but he went on. Then he received word that some
Jewish-Christians were trying to convince Galatian Christians to comply with Jewish
laws and rituals, including circumcision. For these reasons, he wrote this letter to
encourage the Galatian Christians not to embrace these unnecessary practices. Their
righteousness depends not on the observance of Jewish law, but through the grace of
God, made evident through the death and resurrection of Jesus.

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do
not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. For you
were called to freedom, only do not use your freedom as an
opportunity for the flesh, but through love be servants of one
another.”

to our duty to care for the basic needs of all people.
Strengthen with hope

Provide us all with the voice to cry out
for justice for the poor and the oppressed. Amen

(From Being Neighbor: The Catechism and Social Justice, USCCB, April 1998)
“Freedom makes a huge requirement of every human being. With freedom
comes responsibility. For the person who is unwilling to grow up, the person
who does not want to carry his own weight, this is a frightening prospect.”
