For this semester I learned a lot in our subject CHEM111A under our professor
Ma’am Judy Marl Elarmo. My favorite topic that is discussed in our class is The Third
Law of Thermodynamics. Gibbs free energy is my favorite part because it is one of the
important thermodynamic functions for the characterization of a system. It is a factor in
determining outcomes such as the voltage of an electrochemical cell, and the
equilibrium constant for a reversible reaction. I also like solving for the entropy and
enthalpy for a certain reaction.

There are many learnings and skills that I acquired during our time in Chemistry.
Skills like being more time conscious when taking a test and be able to solve problems
quickly before the time is up. It gives me the idea to be concise and effective when
working on something so that soon I can use these skills when I have work that needs
to be done before the deadline is up. For the topics that I learned in this subject, it takes
me a lot of time to understand because sometimes I can’t understand what is taught to
me because of long reading, taking these subjects in a face to face manner is still the
best. The first thing that I learn is chemical safety in a laboratory. It taught us the
different hazards of chemicals and the classification of each chemical. It also teaches us
the recommended safety equipment before experimenting and be prepared before you
start an experiment to reduce/minimize the risk of hazards in any laboratory. The next
thing I learned is the basics of chemistry like significant numbers, balancing equations,
mole and molar mass, etc. After that, we learned about Energy in chemistry. Entropy
and the Second Law of Thermodynamics are next. Chemical Kinetics is also taught to
us. Chemical Equilibrium is also my favorite topic that I learned, Electrochemistry did
give me a challenge, and finally Fuels and Environment Chemistry. I did enjoy my time
learning this subject and it will be essential in my plans.

To apply these learnings and skills in my life as a student and future as a

professional Civil Engineer I need to know more about Chemistry and the field of
Engineering to find me opportunities to find work. I will grind myself to solve different
kinds of problems in the subject of Chemistry so that I’m ready when getting my license
soon. Experience is the key and I need to keep developing my skills to be a good Civil
Engineering student.
