Race Across Australia
From Perth to Sydney in 6 days 10 hours 42 minutes and 32 seconds
New world record: A group of four extreme parathletes from the Austrian province of Vorarlberg
broke the existing world record in crossing from Perth to Sydney. They finished the race within 6
days 10 hours 42 minutes and 32 seconds. The official world record for this route was held by Aus-
trian Gerhard Gulewicz, a non-handicapped long distance cycling professional. In 2007, he finished
the race in 7 days, 8 hours and 49 minutes. During the race, the athletes battled strong winds, and
substantial variations in temperature, ranging from enormous heat of up to 50 degrees Celsius during
the daytime to chilly temperatures below zero at night. The race was also used for charity purposes
and to draw attention to what people with disabilities are able to achieve. For further information on
the race and athletes, please refer to www.raaus.at • Photographs © RAUUS

OSCE Summit in Astana, Kazakhstan,
and IAEA Safeguards Symposium in Vienna
From 1 to 2 December 2010, Australian Minister for Foreign
Affairs, the Hon Kevin Rudd MP (image, right; fifth from left),
headed the Australian delegation to the summit of the Or-
ganisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE)
in Astana, Kazakhstan. It was the organisation’s first summit
since the Istanbul summit in 1999. Australia has been an
Asian Partner for Co-operation since 2009. The summit con-
cluded with Kazakhstan’s President Nursultan Nazarbayev
welcoming the adoption of the Astana Commemorative Dec-
laration, which reconfirmed the Organisation’s comprehensive
approach to security based on trust and transparency. The
Astana Summit brought together Heads of State and Govern-
ment and other top officials from the 56 OSCE participating
States and 12 Partners for Co-operation. Also part of the dele-
gation were Ambassador Michael Potts (second, right) and
Simon Mamouney (first, left) from the Australian Embassy
in Vienna. © AusEmb

On 1 November 2010, former Australian Foreign Minister, the

Hon Gareth Evans AO QC (left image), gave the keynote
address at the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA)
Safeguards Symposium in Vienna. He described the nuclear
threat as ‘real, immediate and immense’. He said compla-
nency was not an option. He outlined the need for disarma-
ment of existing nuclear weapons, and the need to avoid
nuclear proliferation by States and non-State Actors. Evans
said the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) and Fissile
Material Cut-off Treaty (FMCT), and effective nuclear security
were key. For the full text of his speech, please refer to the
