1. The question paper contains 7 questions each of 20 marks and Candidates may attempt any 5 questions.
2. The missing data, if any, may be assumed suitably.
3. Before attempting the question paper, be sure that you have got the correct question paper.

Q.1(a) Define natural frequency. Why is it important to determine the natural frequency of a vibrating [10]
system? An instrument has a natural frequency of 8 Hz. It can withstand a maximum acceleration of
10 m/s2. Determine (i) amplitude, and (ii) maximum velocity.
Q.1(b) Find the Fourier series expansion of the periodic function shown in Figure. [10]

Q.2(a) The ratio k/m of a spring-mass system is given as 4.0. If the mass is deflected 2 cm down, [10]
measured from its equilibrium position, and given an upward velocity of 8 cm/s, determine its
amplitude and maximum acceleration.
Q.2(b) Determine the natural frequency for the system shown in Figure. [10]

Q.3(a) Obtain equation of motion and find damped natural frequency for the system shown below. [10]

Q.3(b) Derive the equation of motion and its solution for a spring mass system with viscous damping. [10]
Discuss the three cases, (a) Overdamped system, (b) Underdamped system, and (c) Critically
damped system.

Q.4(a) A spring-mass is excited by a force Fosin(ωt). At resonance, the amplitude is measured to be 0.58 [10]
cm. At 0.80 resonant frequency, the amplitude is measured to be 0.46 cm. Determine the damping
factor of the system.
Q.4(b) A balanced wheel supported on springs, is rotating at 1200 rpm. If a bolt weighing 15 g and located [10]
at 5 cm from center suddenly comes loose and flies off, determine the steady state vibration
amplitude if the natural frequency of the system is 18 Hz with damping ratio of 0.1.

Q.5(a) For the two dof system shown in figure, obtain the expression for steady state amplitude of [10]
vibration of the two masses.

Q.5(b) Choose coordinates x for the displacement of CG (c) and θ cIockwise for the rotation of the uniform [10]
bar shown in figure and determine the natural frequencies.

Q.6(a) Obtain the dynamic matrix [D] of the system shown in Figure. [10]

Q.6(b) The mass and the flexibility matrices for a system are [10]

Using both the Dunkerley’s and Matrix iteration method, find the fundamental frequency.
Take {X}={1 3 5}T as initial guess for Matrix iteration method and show the result after three
iterations.

Q.7(a) Explain the working principle of an accelerometer and a seismometer with diagram. [10]
Q.7(b) Write short notes on (a) Vibration exciter, and (b) FFT analyzer. [10]
