scope of this module permits it to be used in many different learning situations.

importance of washing your hands as a way of removing bacteria down to
deeper cleaning which is sterilization. You will also identify common
workplace hazards and their control measures to it.
What’s In
Nail technicians work with tools and equipment every day. In our
previous lesson, no matter how simple a tool maybe like pusher or as
complex as nipper, workers must use them with extra care to prolong its
longevity in service. Moreover, nail specialist must know the proper storage
of nail care tools, materials and equipment to have it ready for the next nail
services. However, essentially important as maintaining tools and equipment,
is the study of Public Health. This issue may have been taken for granted by
many but some workers suffer from some kind of serious work-related injury
or illnesses due to exposure to hazards. And this would be the lesson that we
are going to have now.
What’s New
If the words you have gotten from the set of pictures would be the title of our
lesson, what do you think would be the topic of our lesson for today?

Chemical Hazard Infection Ventilate
Health Posture
Practice Occupational Health and Safety Procedures
Working in a glam nail salon may seem like it poses minimal safety risks.
However, it’s a profession that involves more hazards than you might realize.
All the polishing, gluing, and disinfecting can create chemical fumes that pose
a serious risk to your health. Likewise, the way you position your body when
working can threaten your physical wellbeing, and you may even face fire and
infection risks.
You can easily protect yourself from these hazards by implementing effective
control measures around the salon. By following the guidance in this module,
you will be able to feel safe and healthy and can focus on polishing
customers’ nails to perfection.
Chemical Hazards are substances used and/or produced at work that have
the potential to harm the health and safety of people at work.
Know the chemicals you use. You can learn this by reading Material
Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), which should accompany all the products
in your salon that contain dangerous chemicals. MSDS tell you how to
minimize risks for the specific types of chemicals in the products you
use.
Ventilate the work space. Throughout the day, fumes will build up in
the room. Use a downdraught table to remove harmful chemicals and
open windows to let in more fresh air. If ventilation vents and windows
are near each other, make sure staffs work away from the window, as
this allows fresh air to circulate the room properly.
Store chemicals safely. Everyone should follow the storage
instructions stated by the products one uses. He/ She should store
them away from heat sources in well-ventilated storage areas. Keep
bottles closed when they are no longer used.
Good housekeeping. Staff should clean up chemical spillages right
away. They must also safely dispose the materials used to clean
spillages as well as cotton balls and other fabrics soaked in chemicals.
Personal protective equipment. Staff should wear protective gloves
to minimize chemical exposure to skin. Nitrile gloves offer the best
protection, so avoid latex or vinyl. Note that dust masks are not an
acceptable control measure for hazardous chemicals.
Health surveillance. An occupational health professional should
monitor the health of staffs who work around chemicals for a significant
part of their day.

2. Ergonomic risks
Many salon workers adopt a poor posture to carry out their job. They
may lean over and rest their arms on the desk, which strain their back and
applies harmful pressure to contact points on their arms.
Over time, poor ergonomics can lead to bad joints, sore muscles,
and even chronic musculoskeletal disorders.
affs should sit up straight and keep their arms supported by a cushion or pad on the table.
hey should use an adjustable chair that supports their lower back. Feet should lay flat on the floor without strainin
se a cushion or other means to prop up the customer’s hand or foot to prevent staffs from leaning forward.
affs should take regular breaks between customers to stretch.
Mask - is a protective face covering for hygienic purposes and to prevent the face from chemical
exposure.
