Lesson Practice Occupational Health and Safety

The information you will learn from this lesson will help you understand
how to ensure the safety, health, and welfare of people at work and of the
client while in the workplace environment. From here, you will learn the
importance of washing your hands as a way of removing bacteria down to
deeper cleaning which is sterilization. You will also identify common
workplace hazards and their control measures to it.

What’s In

Nail technicians work with tools and equipment every day. In our
previous lesson, no matter how simple a tool maybe like pusher or as
complex as nipper, workers must use them with extra care to prolong its
longevity in service. Moreover, nail specialist must know the proper storage
of nail care tools, materials and equipment to have it ready for the next nail
services. However, essentially important as maintaining tools and equipment,
is the study of Public Health. This issue may have been taken for granted by
many but some workers suffer from some kind of serious work-related injury
or illnesses due to exposure to hazards. And this would be the lesson that we
are going to have now.
What’s New

Activity 1 - 4 Pics 1 Word

Direction: From the set of four (4) pictures, link a word. You have to find out
what the common word from a set of given pictures. Write your answer in
your Beauty Care Notebook.

Health Posture
Practice Occupational Health and Safety Procedures
Working in a glam nail salon may seem like it poses minimal safety risks.
However, it’s a profession that involves more hazards than you might realize.
All the polishing, gluing, and disinfecting can create chemical fumes that pose
a serious risk to your health. Likewise, the way you position your body when
working can threaten your physical wellbeing, and you may even face fire and
infection risks.

You can easily protect yourself from these hazards by implementing effective
control measures around the salon. By following the guidance in this module,
you will be able to feel safe and healthy and can focus on polishing
customers’ nails to perfection.

Definition of Technical Terms

Occupational Hazards - are various environmental factors or stresses that

can cause sickness, impaired health, or significant discomfort in workers and
can be classified as chemical, physical, biological or ergonomic

Chemical Hazards are substances used and/or produced at work that have
the potential to harm the health and safety of people at work.

Infection is a condition when micro-organisms invade the body and multiply

causing illness.

Ergonomics is the study of people’s efficiency in their working environment.

There are three main types of nail salon hazards:
1. Chemical Hazards

Salon staff constantly works directly with and around hazardous

substances:
 Nail polish, artificial nails, primers, polish remover, and more.
 Filing nails creates dust that can be harmful to inhale.
 Disinfecting chemicals.
 Cloths, cushions, cotton balls, and other fabrics soaked in cleaning
chemicals or glue remover.

These hazards pose serious risks to staff’s health and safety:

 Inhalation of chemicals or dust can lead to irritation, headaches,

dizziness, sickness, occupational asthma, or even cancer.
 Ingestion can cause throat irritation and illness.
 Direct contact with the skin or eyes can cause irritation, rashes, or
occupational eczema and dermatitis.
 Poorly-handled waste chemicals and fabrics continue to spread
fumes and pose a fire hazard.
Safety Measures for Controlling Hazardous Chemicals:

 Know the chemicals you use. You can learn this by reading Material
Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), which should accompany all the products
in your salon that contain dangerous chemicals. MSDS tell you how to
minimize risks for the specific types of chemicals in the products you
use.
 Ventilate the work space. Throughout the day, fumes will build up in
the room. Use a downdraught table to remove harmful chemicals and
open windows to let in more fresh air. If ventilation vents and windows
are near each other, make sure staffs work away from the window, as
this allows fresh air to circulate the room properly.
 Store chemicals safely. Everyone should follow the storage
instructions stated by the products one uses. He/ She should store
them away from heat sources in well-ventilated storage areas. Keep
bottles closed when they are no longer used.
 Good housekeeping. Staff should clean up chemical spillages right
away. They must also safely dispose the materials used to clean
spillages as well as cotton balls and other fabrics soaked in chemicals.
 Personal protective equipment. Staff should wear protective gloves
to minimize chemical exposure to skin. Nitrile gloves offer the best
protection, so avoid latex or vinyl. Note that dust masks are not an
acceptable control measure for hazardous chemicals.
 Health surveillance. An occupational health professional should
monitor the health of staffs who work around chemicals for a significant
part of their day.

10
2. Ergonomic risks
Many salon workers adopt a poor posture to carry out their job. They
may lean over and rest their arms on the desk, which strain their back and
applies harmful pressure to contact points on their arms.
Over time, poor ergonomics can lead to bad joints, sore muscles,
and even chronic musculoskeletal disorders.

Safety Measures for Ergonomic Hazards:

affs should sit up straight and keep their arms supported by a cushion or pad on the table.
hey should use an adjustable chair that supports their lower back. Feet should lay flat on the floor without strainin
se a cushion or other means to prop up the customer’s hand or foot to prevent staffs from leaning forward.
affs should take regular breaks between customers to stretch.

Avoiding musculoskeletal strain is straightforward, so long as staffs

consistently maintain a good posture and improve their working space.
3. Risk of infection

Customers or staffs with broken skin or uncovered wounds may allow

infections to spread, particularly when they soak their hands or feet in
basins. Good hygiene practices can easily prevent the spread of
infection.

Safety measures for preventing infections:

1. Cleaning is the removal of soil and a reduction in the number of micro-

organisms from equipment surfaces by washing in detergent and warm water.
Methods of Cleaning:
 Rinse the equipment in warm water (15-30°C) to remove any
blood or body fluids. Hot water used at this stage will cause
coagulation and the substances will stick to the instrument.
Cold water will harden fats making cleaning more difficult.
 Wash the equipment in a sink filled with warm water and a mild
alkaline detergent to remove all visible soiling .
 Rinse the equipment thoroughly in running water.
 Dry with a cotton cloth. Drying prevents residues from
damaging equipment during sterilization
 .Store under cover in a clean, dry, and dust free environment
2. Disinfection is the removal of micro-organisms by chemical or physical
means. The level of decontamination depends on duration of exposure to
lethal levels of disinfectants. Unlike sterilization, disinfection does not remove
all microorganisms but reduces the population to safe levels.
Proper use of disinfectants:
 All tools must be thoroughly cleaned of all visible matter or residue
before soaking in disinfectant and prevent them from being effective.
 Tools must be
completely immersed
in disinfectant
solution for the time
specified on the
product label.
Complete immersion
of tools means enough liquid to cover all surfaces of the item including
the handles.
3. Sterilization is the total destruction of all
living micro-organisms.
Method of sterilization:
 Physical agents such as radiation and
heat
 Chemical agents, such as antiseptics,
disinfectants, and vapor fumigants
PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
These garments are designed to protect the wearer’s body from injury, and
chemicals.

Glove – a garment covering the whole hand

Smock Gown - is a loose cloak or robe worn to protect the clothes.

Mask - is a protective face covering for hygienic purposes and to prevent the face from chemical
exposure.

Headband- is a band of absorbent material worn on or around the head

across the forehead to keep the sweat and
the hair off the face.
