Chapter 2 Problem Identification

Chapter 2
Problem Identification
The objective of our project is to create a metal detector. Detectors which are
available commercially in market cost around Rs 2,000 to Rs 25,000 depending upon
the technology used and their detecting range. Also they are usually big and bulky
almost to size of human based on their detecting range.

We decided to create the metal detector which is cheap and also compact in
size. Due to the compactness of circuit and a basic technology used, we were forced to
make compromise on its detecting range.

Initially the plan was to create the circuit using capacitive sensor. It was later
found that the inductive sensors are cheaper than capacitive sensors. Also capacitive
sensors were able to detect both metals and non-metals, but on other hand inductive
sensors were able to detect metals alone, which specifically suited our objective.
