PERIOD OF ACTIVITY 1 WEEK

LAB NO 1.0
TITLE INTRODUCTION ECW341 SAFETY & HEALTH

This course reinforces concepts introduced in basic fluid mechanics,

hydraulics, hydrology and water quality. Students are required to
conduct experiments, analyze and interpret data and prepare laboratory
reports.

Health and safety are regulations and procedures intended to prevent

accident or injury in workplaces or public environments. Health and safety
is very important nowadays and always become first priority especially
when working in laboratory.

OBJECTIVES

To build health and safety awareness between students and to ensure the
students know how to deal with health and safety related to fluid
mechanics, hydraulics, hydrology and water quality laboratory activities.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

PREAMBLE At the end of the laboratory works, students should be able to:

Identify the awareness of health and safety related to fluid mechanics,

hydraulics, hydrology and water quality laboratory activities.

PROPER ATTIRE

Students ECW 341 must wear safety laboratory lab coat or appropriate
jacket while in the laboratory, even when they are not performing
experiments. Students with long hair should tie their hair back. Students
must wear close-toed shoes (safety shoes); sandals are not permitted and
appropriate PPE based to the types of laboratory activities.

FIRST AID EQUIPMENT

Students should know where all first-aid equipment is located before they
begin experimenting. This includes fire extinguishers, telephones and exit
doors. Students should alert the instructor immediately if injury occurs.

HANDLING EQUIPMENTS & CHEMICALS

Handle equipment with care, and keep hands away from your eyes, face
and mouth during experiments. Keep chemicals away from open flames,
as many are flammable. Students should be careful when handling
glassware.

PROHIBITED ACTIVITIES
Smoking, eating, drinking and chewing gum are never allowed in the
science lab. In addition, students should never perform unauthorized
experiments or enter storage rooms without an instructor's permission.

CONSIDERATIONS
Students should be taught to respect chemicals and experiments, not to
fear them. Instructors can help create a safe and positive environment by
explaining and demonstrating experiments and supervising students
properly.

HAZARD ASSESSMENT PROCESS

Student in laboratory may be exposed to a variety of workplace hazards
in the course of performing their functions. The type and degree of
exposure is dependent upon the type of laboratory and its location. A key
component of a health and safety program is to identify and assess
hazards and determine appropriate controls. A systematic approach to
hazard assessment includes the following steps:

1. List all work- related tasks and activities

2. Identify potential biological, chemical, physical and psychological
hazards associated with each task
3. Assess the risk of the hazard by considering the severity of
consequences of exposure, the probability that the exposure will
occur and the frequency the task is done
4. Identify the controls that will eliminate or reduce the risk. The
hierarchy of controls should be followed. This means that
engineering controls are the most effective, followed by
administrative controls (such as training and rules), followed by
personal protective equipment (PPE)
5. Implement the controls for each hazard
6. Communicate the hazard assessments and required controls to all
students who perform the task.
7. Evaluate the controls periodically to ensure they are effective.
