Thesis Search 1.01 Introduction, (Our view of cities isa mix of realty and truth, hype and perception usually fitered through media cepresentations. The overall cuture ofa place and the arts help define and shape identity, perception and image within the citys own terms. The deve to create rich sensory environments incites provides ‘new opportunities for those working inthe erative professions (Landry, 2010) With the cities growing into urban sprawls: and agglomerations, the need for a planned growth of cutural and public spaces in the expanded city Is ‘often ignored. The commercial, residential and other forms of works places take the front seat in these developments which are a result of real estate riven projects away from the cty centers The ‘utural and public realm falls short in keeping pace With such developments Meanwhile prime pockets of land in the city often ‘ext to natural features, water bodies, ecological sites etc,_though demarcated for public and semi > Architectural hese 2014 | 1 public uses in the Masterplan le vacant in wat of government These often get ‘encroached upon o misused in some other way a 3 timely ntereession by authorities als to happen ‘The fact that most Indian eles have realized the Importance of developing their waterfronts only in recent years, clearly depicts the missing connection between the cy an its water bodies. Lacsted on the Deccan Plateau in the south-eastern part of Karnataka, Bangalore India’s third mest populous city and fith-mest populous urban agglomeration. Bangalore is known as the Silicon Valley of nda because of ts role asthe nations leading Information Technology (I) exporter. The ety blessed With salubrious climate, was once famous for beautiful gardens, parks and natural akes. ‘The effect of urbanization has taken a heavy tll on the Beautiful lakes in Bangalore. The lakes in the city hhave been largely encroached for urban infrastructure and 25 a result only 17 good lakes exist as against S1 heathy lakes in 1985, Urban development has caused 16 lakes getting converted to bus stands, Galf courses, playgrounds and residential colonies. The Bangalore Development Authority and Lake Development Authority over the past few years are now working on conservation ofthe lakes and developing the \waterfronts for public and semi public uses ‘Secondly, Bangalore being overshadowed by its image in the recent past has overlooked the need to expand ‘the cultural institutions specially in the regions that have become a part of the agglomeration lately. It lacks landmark cultural complexes that 2 metropolitan city demands ‘Thus overiapping the two identified major concerns, cutural intervention on a waterfront site seemed idyll in atrly urban context Moreover it would help create a development model at 2 national level, helping to create awareness abut the water eco system and lake conservation at the same time.
