1. Introduction and Purpose of the Study

The COVID-19 pandemic affected the lives of many people, including those of jeepney
drivers. In the Philippines, the operations of the primary mode of public transport system,
especially Jeepneys, were halted. Jeepney drivers were forced off the road by the limitations
imposed, they had no income for months, had debts piling up, thousands were left in hunger
and in dire need of everyday essentials. Since the COVID-19 have caused the operations of
Jeepney drivers to stop, the purpose of the study is to determine the consequences of the
pandemic in terms of the income, family, and health of the Jeepney drivers by conducting in-
depth interviews. By knowing their daily struggles during the pandemic, the researchers would
gain an understanding on the lives of the jeepney drivers.

2. Description of the Research

In the study, the participants are given three (3) forms prior to the interview. The (1)
informed consent form (2) the information sheet and the (3) consent form for interview. All of
these are in English and Tagalog. After agreeing with the conditions and filling up the forms, the
participants would then be interviewed.

3. Subject Participation

The participants must be jeepney drivers of Calamba Central Terminal and should be
able to communicate verbally. For safety measures, the participant should also be free from flu
symptoms such as headaches, running nose, sore throat, cough and fever. The interview will last
approximately 1 to 1 hour and 30 minutes. The interview will one time only, however, if the
researchers would need to follow up on some details, the participants will be interviewed again.

4. Potential Risks and Discomforts

The researchers understand that the pandemic has been a major stressor for Filipino
jeepney drivers. The participant might become stressed or uncomfortable while expressing their
feelings during the interview. In this situation, the researchers fully understand if the
participant would prefer to stop the interview.

5. Potential Benefits

Jeepney drivers that will participate in the study can help contribute to the lack of
information government officials have on the struggles of the said participants. By knowing their
struggles through in-depth interviews, the data collected can be forwarded to government
officials as a guide to better serve the public and make solutions for the problems the jeepney
drivers are currently facing.

6. Confidentiality

The researchers would like to interview the participants “on the record” so that the
researchers can identify the participant in publications resulting from this research. However, if
the participant wishes to remain anonymous, the researchers will not use the participants’ name
in any quotations or reports of the findings; the researcher will use a pseudonym of the
participant’ choosing. Once the audio recordings are coded and transcribed, they will be
destroyed.

7. Compensation

Subjects will not be compensated for participation in this study.

8. Voluntary Participation and Authorization

If you decide to participate in this study, you may withdraw from your participation at
any time without penalty.

10. Cost/Reimbursements

There is no cost for participating in this study. Any medical expenses resulting from
participation in this study will not be reimbursed by the investigators.
