INTRODUCTION
An Information system is a formal, sociotechnical, organizational system designed to
collect, process, store, and distribute information. In a sociotechnical perspective,
information systems are composed of four components: task, people, structure (or

roles), and technology.

In business organizations, information systems play a vital role. Information systems

have a very important role in every aspect of a business organization. Such as sales
and marketing systems that function to increase sales, see opportunities and market
segments that are targeted by sales, and increase customer satisfaction with products
and services.

For the proper understanding of the information systems, we need a business

organization that is using information systems in every part of their business and we
know that e-commerce websites have the best use of information systems in their
enterprise. So, we are going to analyze the information systems of an e-commerce
website named Daraz.
Daraz is an online marketplace and logistics company that operates in markets of South
Asia and Southeast Asia. It was founded in 2012 as an e-commerce website in Pakistan
by Muneeb Maayr (Founder) & Farees Shah (Co-Founder) at the German-based
Venture Capital, Rocket Internet. Then Daraz expanded its e-commerce marketplace in
Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Nepal also.

Daraz established its e-commerce marketplace in Bangladesh in 2015. Soon it gained a

huge amount of popularity among the youth and became the number one e-commerce
platform in Bangladesh. More than 5 million users of daraz in Bangladesh. It is a trusted
e-commerce website for product and cash on delivery.
In this report, we are going to talk about the information systems used in Daraz e-
commerce website. We will discuss:

 ● The IS software/module used in Daraz enterprise and how those are used.
● The IS hardware elements used in Daraz enterprise and how those are operated.
● Different types of IS operations used in Daraz and by whom and how they
perform those.
● How can we improve the IS operations for better performance and experience.

After analyzing the information systems of Dazar in our report we can expect a proper
understanding about the Information systems and how it works. The expecting results
are:

● We will understand How Daraz control their business processes by using the

● We will able to know how a enterprise or organization deals with information

INFORMATION SYSTEM INFRASTRUCTURE

The IS Infrastructure of Daraz

Daraz is a complete online marketplace with proper process. They maintain some
different software for different purposes.

3 different software Daraz use:

● Seller Center: It's a module through which the merchants get registered. Enlist
their products on a website, change price, assort product and manage their
online store. On the other hand, the managers maintain the sales, update the
data and analyze different types of functions and situations.

● CRM: For maintaining good relationships with customer care, they use some
modules like Zendesk, LMS, Zoho and these types of software.

● WOMS: Warehouse and order management system mainly used by the

operations team and partially customer service team as well. Its module helps to
keep in Inventory, manage orders, manage warehouse return management,
cross dock and drop ship. Apart from those, Daraz uses different IT systems like
Google BT software, SEO tool and others for marketing and data analysis.

3 different hardware elements Daraz use:

● Webcam: This hardware device allows users to take videos or pictures and
transmit them over the internet. Nowadays, Daraz is trying to increase the use of
webcams. As Coronavirus spreads, companies are being forced to work from
home, working from home can make managers feel like managers have less
direct supervision over workers. In order to keep productivity high while working
remotely, Daraz is taking the advantage of webcam.

● Web Server: Web server can refer to hardware or software, or both of them
working together. On the hardware side,a web-server is a computer that stores
web-server software and website's component files. Daraz uses Nginx and

● Scanner: This hardware may be used to convert a printed picture,drawing or

document into a digital file which can be edited on a computer. Daraz uses it to
simplify the storage aspect of organising files, as digital copies can be made and
saved virtually. Scanners take copies of physical documents of sellers, product
information, employees list and convert them into digital files which means they
can then be stored on the computer. On the other hand, there is less possibility
of losing files from the computer whether paper documents can go missing.

The IS Operations of Daraz

The heart of any business is the operations department.

The 3 different operations Daraz perform:

1. Network channels
2. Infrastructures
3. Providing technical solutions

Why perform the operation?

Maintaining stable network and storage infrastructure needed for an online e-commerce
platform. Provide technical support such as database solution, re-routing channels,
account creation for employees, different sorts of access into servers and portals, etc.

Here the operations department is also performing some very crucial tasks.

● Stocking and maintaining inventory of all products in the warehouse.

● They also take care of product delivery and return.

● Works with different vendors to maintain stocks in an optimum level.

● Central operations hub looks after branch hubs as well.

● Provide logistics for any ad-hoc operational need.

● Works with third party delivery service to reach customers outside of delivery zones.

● Maintains log of inventory and third-party transactions to help the finance department.

Analysis of IS Operation

An Information System can be defined as a set of interrelated elements or components

that collect, manipulate and store and disseminate data and information as well as a
feedback mechanism.

For any company to run a successful business, one needs to invest in high-quality
information systems that will simplify processing data and statistics, either
organizational or financial. Most companies have experienced data problems caused by
lack of accuracy and reliability, and as a result, the workflow slows down. The primary
goal for all companies is to reduce human errors and increase efficiency. To be able to
achieve such goals, any company has to get an excellent information system.

A quality IS operation will do the following:

● Operate at an acceptable cost, commensurate with the value produced for the
firm;
● Meet carefully defined performance standards (such as response time and
system availability)
● Produce accurate and reliable output
● Be easy to learn and use
● Be flexible and fast decision making capabilities.

Effective ways to improve IS operation of Daraz

Daraz is one of the most popular online retailers in Bangladesh. However, there is a lot
of competition but daraz stands top for their efficiency in the online market. Their
expansion is noticeable in Asia and surely they will expand more in near future. As
daraz is already a leader in online retail Bangladesh there are still numerous ways to
improve upon their IS operation.

Some of the recommendations are-

● In e-commerce, it is very important to be prompt. Customers choose e-commerce

so that they can save time. So, the whole process needs to be really quick. Fast
response and issue solving will satisfy the customers with the process.

● Customer service should be provided enough information about the product.

Because if he/she is unable to answer queries about the product, the customer
will lose his/her trust on the site and will doubt the product quality.

 ● Daraz turnover rate is high so more permanent employees need to be increased
as well as more facilities to employees need to be given.

Interview of an IS personnel

In our report we wanted to interview a IS personal from Daraz but for this Covid-19
pandemic situation we were not able to do it. So, we decided to interview an IS
personnel from another enterprise and discussed the improvements of Daraz
Information system operations. He agreed with our analysis and our improvement areas
of the Is operations will be much beneficial for Daraz if the organization achieves those
improvements in the IS operation system.

CONCLUSION
In the end of our report on Daraz information system analysis, we can assure that we
now have a better understanding about information systems. We learn about IS
software/modules, hardware elements and IS operations. We also learned how to
operate an IS operation and what kind of skills needed to operate an Is operation. We
learn how to improve an organization’s performance by just improving its IS operations.

In conclusion we can say that this report helped us to improve our knowledge about
Information systems and we now fully understand how the Information systems runs in
an organization and It is clear to us that the information System is the core of an
organization.
