Title: Conductor Characteristics

Aim: to draw and interpret a graph of the characteristic of a filament lamp.

Apparatus:

1. Rheostat resistor
2. Ammeter
3. Voltmeter
4. Battery
5. Filament lamp

Method

1. Set up the circuit in series using the apparatus listed above.

2. Vary the resistor and take the reading using the ammeter and voltmeter for every new
resistance.
3. Record the various currents and voltages in the table below
4. Draw a smooth graph using the values in the table given below.

The table below shows values for voltage across and current through a filament lamp

Resistance /ohms Voltage /Volts Current/Amperes

Discussion:

 What is the shape of the characteristic (graph drawn)?

 Explain this characteristic in the context of the filament lamp, current and voltage
through it.
 Explain why you would expect the characteristic of a filament lamp to be symmetrical for
both directions of current.
Conclusion:

 State characteristic of graph.
