Development of a Fixed-Wing Short Take-Off and Landing (STOL) Unmanned Aerial

Vehicle (UAV) with Cooperative Ability for Disaster Risk Reduction Management

This invention is called

multi-purpose flight simulator platform, it is a device that recreates aircraft flight and the
environment which it flies for pilot training, design and other purposes. As you can see in those
pictures, it has an out-of-the-window display, a pilot seat, joystick and pedals and that replicates
the equations that govern how aircraft fly, how they react to applications of flight controls, the
effects of other aircraft systems and how the aircraft reacts to external factors such as air density,
turbulence, wind shear, cloud precipitation and many more. This invention will serve as training
grounds for the pilots and the main purpose of this invention is that this will be safer for the
pilots since this device is designed for the pilots to know whether an aircraft will going to fly or
not without really controlling a real aircraft and if they will able to control a real aircraft. Also,
they will be able to know if the aircraft that they are designing will successfully fly or not like
what they have made in Lawin-1. Thus, a flight simulator will prevent accidents for the trainees
or pilots.

Lawin-1
This invention is designed to enhance the capabilities for disaster response, rescue
operations and climate change adaption in order to minimize the loss in property and human
lives. It has an aerial imaging to immediately
detect and to know the effect of the disaster
in the Philippines that the humans cannot do
and it is done through the help of Unmanned
Aerial Vehicle (UAV). With the help of this,
they will have the ability to provide
immediate rescue and relief operations in the
affected areas in any part of the country due
to the disaster. This invention is called
Lawin-1 that was made up of natural fiber
and it uses gas and mostly batteries. Lawin-1
is also known as “0.5” because this invention
have only reached the half of the estimated
distance that Lawin-1 should fly. They have
already tested this one in Mati, Davao
Oriental when a disaster occurred. Lawin-1
has camera and sensors that can easily be
integrated into the airframe. The Lawin-1
can also be used in applications such as
security and monitoring, cargo delivery and
deployment and data communications relay.
They are not still releasing this device
because they just have tested it last year and it is still not fully develop and furnish. According to
them, after National Science and Technology Week, they will continue to develop this Lawin-1
because what they have made is just a 1.8 meters or the half scale and what they are going to do
is a 4 meters scale. In addition to that, Lawin-1 already reached up to 19 kilometers when they
tested it.
About the Program

This program is a collaboration of FEATI University, De La Salle University and Ateneo

de Manila University. The FEATI University will to design the airframe and form the
components of UAV. De La Salle University will develop the flight controller for a modular
UAV. Ateneo de Manila University will develop the communication system of the UAV with
cooperative ability with other UAV’s and other ground units. The program is a collaboration of
FEATI University, De La Salle University and Ateneo de Manila University with FEATI
University’s Research Fellow Dr. Rogel Mari Sese as the Program leader.
