MODULE 7 WEEK NO.9

Activity

1. Are you agree or disagree with this statement? Why?

“A man, to become a man, must have a child to come after him”
I strongly disagree with the statement. For me, a child will never define a man on
who he is as a man and as a person. Yes, having a child to come after us and have our
surnames on them is a wonderful experience but it will never be a reason to say that a
man is man enough just because of it. A man for me is someone who has love, good
beliefs, and acceptance in him that no matter what life throws at us, we still choose to
stand and treat everybody with kindness and love. As long as you do good things
towards everyone and always choose to be kind, you are a man and you are enough.

Exercise

1. Characterize Awiyao and Lumnay. Describe their strength and weaknesses.

Awiyao and Lumnay are both in love towards each other and have a strong faith
between them yet this love wasn’t enough to let them stay together until their death
because of not having a child for a long period of time. Awiyao is a loving and
hardworking husband who has always been faithful and in love towards her sweet,
caring, and hardworking wife named Lumnay. Their love was strong yet the society’s
belief or their tribe’s tradition brought them apart and made us understand that sometimes
our love isn’t enough in a cruel and judgmental world.

2. Identify the conflict of the story.

The conflict of the story “The Wedding Dance” is Man vs. Society in which
Awiyao and Lumnay doesn’t want to follow or wear their tribe’s tradition which is to
marry another woman if a man and his wife cannot bear a child yet they still had to
follow the society even if it caused them pain.

Assessment

1. Discuss the theme of the story? Explain.

The theme of the story is about the exploration on Filipino traditions. It also talks
about how true love needs sacrifice, hope, and that sometimes in life love is never enough
to have a happy ending. Sometimes we also need to set someone free not because we no
longer love them but because it is the best for everyone.

Reflection

1. Find out if the belief of the people in the story is similar from that of other ethnic
communities in our country.
Based on my research, there aren’t a lot of ethnic communities in the Philippines
who practices the same tradition but most of these communities put a big importance on
bearing a child between married couples. Some ethnic groups also believes that a man
can marry multiple women as long as he can raise them in order to have more children so
the community will stay for a long time amidst the modern world.
