SUMMARY

Headmaster leadership determines the center and the rhythm of school. One of
efforts in improving the human resources in school that takes prominent role done by
head master is the supervision of learning because the success or not of the learning
in the school determined more by headmaster as the leader.
Headmaster leadership and supervision in the learning process in SMPN 26 of
Malang city very determine the school quality which is newly established and
situated at the periphery of the Malang city. Then the writer want to know more
about the leadership style that is implemented in effort to improve the school quality
of SMPN 26 of Malang City, and want to know the supervision technique to the
teacher in the learning process, and want to know the supporting and the inhibiting
factors in implementing the supervision function in the learning process at SMPN 26
of Malang city.
The data collection done by the researcher and supported by key informants.
The data collection technique included (1) depth interview (2) observation and
participative observation, and (3) documentation. The obtained data through the
procedure then be analyzed descriptively qualitatively.
Based on the results and data analysis, it was obtained findings as follows: (1)
the leadership style of headmaster of SMPN 26 of Malang city uses more than one,
participative democratic leadership style and authoritarian style in urgent condition
(2) the role of headmaster of SMPN 26 of Malang city in improving the learning
process in school by giving intensive cultivation to the teacher through direct class
observation individual supervision technique (3) the success of direct class
observation individual supervision was influenced by external and internal factors,
either supporting and inhibiting factors.
There were several suggestions, (1) for educators, the research should be used
as one of references in developing and improving the quality (2) for headmasters or
school supervisors, the research should become useful information in determining the
leadership style and useful in cultivating the teacher professionalism (3) for
government, in this case the Ministry of Education and Culture should use the results
as investigation materials and information in effort to improve the teacher quality in
schools (4) for the science development, the research can be used to enrich the
science insight and as information and reference for the next researcher that want to
study similar cases.
