Case Study #1: Catalyst 9300 Dropping Traffic
• Symptoms
• Users reporting websites not loading
• Ping traffic passing, but other traffic not passing

• Troubleshooting Approach
• Initially thought to be hardware failure of ports
• Lab reproduction found that it was related to Energy Efficient Ethernet
(EEE)
• Root Cause
• EEE not officially supported on multigigabit (mGig) ports at the time
• Optimization made in 16.6.3 and 16.8.1

Case Study #2: C9300 Four Ports Stop
Forwarding Traffic
• Symptoms
• Group of 4 ports dropping traffic and incrementing input layer 1 errors
• Sometimes ports would not come up at all

• Troubleshooting Approach
• RMA done as initially thought to be hardware failure
• Lab investigation performed to find the issue

• Root Cause
• Sometimes 8 port PHY (port-asic) didn’t initialize properly on bootup

Case Study #3: Cat9400 Linecards Go To ‘Faulty’
Status
• Symptoms
• Catalyst 9400 linecards reported failing bootup diagnostic tests
• Troubleshooting Approach
• Found that there were CPU policer drops for the diagnostic traffic
• Shared CPU policer can cause these drops if there is excessive traffic in
other queues
• Root Cause
• Excessive traffic for other categories in shared policer were causing
diagnostic traffic to be dropped at CPU
• Optimization made in 16.6.5, 16.9.2, to have diagnostic traffic have its
own policer instead of shared

Case Study #4: Catalyst 9000 Stackwise-Virtual
Support
• Stackwise-Virtual (SVL) is not supported on every Catalyst 9000
model depending on software release used
• Instances where SVL was configured but not officially tested &
supported on certain software releases
• Universal image makes it difficult to block CLI per switch model
• make sure to consult release notes and config guide for specific
software release to check for feature compatibility
