Overview of this guide

This guide explains how to perform day-to-day tasks (such as
exporting bad disks) on Plasmon jukeboxes supplied as part of a
Archive Server system. You do this by issuing commands from the
front panel controls of an attached jukebox.
The guide assumes that the complete Archive Server system has
already been installed and configured, and is up and running.
The guide contains the following chapters:
• Introduction on page 1 – General instructions on using the
front panel keypad.
• Operator Mode Commands on page 11 – Detailed instructions
on performing each operator task using the front panel
keypad.
No special access privileges are required to perform the
operations described in this guide.
The Administrator’s Guide describes the advanced system options
available to those with sufficient access privileges, as well as
giving installation and setup instructions.
This guide only deals with operations available via a Plasmon
jukebox. Please see the other documentation that came with your
Archive Server system for information on the server machine
itself.

Chapter 1
Int r odu cti o n
C hap ter 1 – Int r oduct ion

Overview
You’ll find the following information in this chapter:
• Instructions on inserting and removing media from a jukebox.
• Introduction the the front panel controls found on Plasmon
M, D, G and Enterprise D-series jukeboxes.
• Basic instructions on using the keypad buttons to control the
Archive Server.
• An overview of the four operational modes available.

Note: The rest of this guide is concerned only with Operator

mode – other modes are described in the Administrator’s Guide.

The ‘active’ jukebox

If your system has two or more jukeboxes attached to a single
Archive Server, you can only control the Archive Server from one
of the attached jukeboxes at any time – this becomes the active
jukebox until you return it to Idle mode. The front panels of all
other attached jukeboxes are locked in Idle mode for the
duration of that session. This removes the possibility of the
Archive Server receiving two or more conflicting commands at the
same time.

Inserting and removing media

There are two ways to insert or remove media from a Plasmon
jukebox:
• Via the front door – D-series, magazines only
• Via the IEE (Mailslot).

Using the front door

This allows you to remove or insert entire magazines from D and
Enterprise D-series jukeboxes.

D-series
For everyday operations, the front door is opened via the keypad.
If you want to export all bad disks, for example, the front door
will open automatically. A message on the LCD panel will tell you
when to close the door.

Enterprise D-series
On Enterprise D-series jukeboxes, access to media is inside the
unit’s main front door, via an internal IEE door.
internal IEE door

You must open and close the main front door manually, but the
internal IEE door can only be opened by a keypad command (see
Opening the door or Mailslot on page 62).

Using the IEE (Mailslot)

Plasmon jukeboxes are equipped with an Import-Export Element
(IEE), also known as a Mailslot. We use the two terms
interchangeably throughout this guide.
This allows you to insert or remove a single disk (CD or DVD) or
MO cartridge. Again, opening and closing the Mailslot is
controlled via the keypad (except for the D-series, which you must
close manually).
• M-series – The Mailslot is on top of the unit.
• D and G-series – The Mailslot is below the keypad/LCD panel:

– #### UNUSED DISKS – This is the number of
unformatted disk sisdes available to store data on.
– ### BAD DISKS – This is the number of disk sides that
have failed and been replaced automatically by the
system. These disks are waiting to be removed.
– ### NEED REPAIR – This is the number of disks that
have failed and that the system has been unable to
automatically replace. These disks are waiting to be
exported and sent off to have the data recovered.
– NAS Archive Server – This is the product name.
– DATA CACHE ##% FREE or
DATA CACHE IS EMPTY – Mirrored Disk Cache Usage.
This displays the free space remaining on the mirrored
disks used to cache data before it is written to permanent
optical storage. Usage is displayed as percentage free.

Operator mode
This is the mode you’ll use as an operator. It allows you to
perform everyday tasks on the Archive Server, such as checking
the number of empty disks or exporting corrupt (bad) disks. See
Operator Mode Commands on page 11 for details.

Config mode
This mode is only available to administrators. It allows them to set
up various operational parameters, such as the IP address of the
Archive Server. See the Administrator’s Guide.

Admin mode
This mode is only available to administrators. It allows them to
perform administrative tasks such as controlling migration,
rebuilding the database and stopping and starting the Archive
Server. See the Administrator’s Guide.

Conventions used in this guide

The buttons do not have text printed on them. Instead, the LCD
panel shows the function of each button under different menu
options. For example, in the Show Empty Disks menu, the
lefthand key in the figure below is called Sel (short for Select):

Figure 1-7. Keypad buttons explained

If an operation requires you to press this key, the guide will say:
1 Press Sel .
In general, the LCD panel shows the keys as having the following
names:
• Sel – Allows you to select a menu option or
confirm a new (or existing) value.
• Prv and Nxt – Use to cycle through menu
options and parameters, and enter new parameter values.
• Esc – Exits from the current menu or option.
This either takes you back up a level, if you are at a main
menu item, or cancels any changes currently making and
returns you to the current menu.
Sometimes, the LCD panel will only give two options:

Accept Cancel

• Pressing either of the two lefthand keys means

Accept.
• Pressing either of the two righthand keys means
Cancel.
Sometimes there is only one option (CONTINUE) – press any key
to continue.

Exporting bad disks for repair

This option allows you to remove a single disk from a jukebox IEE
(Mailslot) for disk recovery. The number of bad disks waiting to
be repaired is shown periodically in Idle mode display.

Note: This option is not available if there are no bad disks that
need repairing.

Only disks that need to be repaired will be available to export.

These are disks which have become bad, and for which there is no
replacement inside the jukebox. For example, if only one copy of
a disk exists, and it fails, it must be sent off for repair to recover
the data. If two copies of a disk exist, and one fails, the failed disk
will not be available to send for repair, because a working
replacement already exists in the system.

When you remove disks, they disappear from the list of
available disks. If the last disk is removed, the next-to-last disk
will still have Nxt available on the selection line, but pressing
it will have no effect. The same is true for removing the first
disk in the list.

Emailing a status report

You can email a status report to the system administrator, if the
Archive Server has been configured to do this.
1 From Idle mode, press any key on the keypad to enter
Operator mode.
2 Press Prv until 1.7 EMAIL STATUS is displayed:

1.7 EMAIL STATUS

Sel Prv Nxt Esc

You’ll be prompted to confirm:

CONFIRM?
Accept Cancel

3 Press Accept to send the status report.

If the message is sent, the LCD will display:

STATUS REPORT SENT

Continue

If the message is not sent, the LCD will display:

STATUS REPORT FAILED

Continue

This could indicate a configuration error.

4 Press any key within a minute to return to
1.7 EMAIL STATUS (it defaults back to this automatically).
The report contains the following information:
• Number of empty (unformatted) disks
• Number of bad disks
• Size, free space and percentage used on the mirrored cache
partition, the system partition holding the Manager database,
and the partition used to hold the log files
• Jukeboxes currently attached, and what drives are associated
with them, with the current state of those drives (in use, not
in use, or disabled).
