Pathfinder – Information Page

This booklet has been put together to get a better understanding of Pathfinder Diagnostic Software. Using a
393 service base , we have broken down each screen in an attempt to clarify the Pathfinder program. Across
the 39x range of trucks, most of the adjustments, parameters are the same. For information regarding
391,392,394 machines , we have an additional sub section at the rear of this booklet which will cover the
screens that are specific to each model. This also acts as an update section. For future releases of Pathfinder
where a new screen has been added, the new screen will appear in the sub section so the main frame of the
booklet does not have to be altered.

In an attempt to provide as much information as possible, values such as milli amps, voltages and calibrated
values have been provided. These values have been taken from known good machines. Allthough every effort
has been made to keep this as accurate as possible, we must understand that this is a guide to understanding
the Pathfinder Diagnostic Program.

Inputs and Outputs-Digital Inputs
Traction
Traction Digital Inputs Inputs and Outputs

Digital Inputs allows us to

monitor our inputs to the
controller. For example: seat
normally open (S4) is a 1.
When the seat switch is
closed, (S4) normally closed
will switch to 1 and (S4)
normally open will switch to 0.
The same applies for brake 1,
2,3. With park brake applied
the reading is 101, with brake
released it will read 010. Use
this section to check your
inputs.

The numbers to the left of the input function

represent the pin number on the controller, wiring
schematic and harness plug.

Traction
Traction Outputs Inputs and Outputs

In the Outputs section, we can

monitor the output signal from
the controller. The release
valve (1Y4 ) will switch from 0
to a 1 when the drive pedal is
depressed. The activation of
the gas cut off valve can also
be monitored. Zero is off and 1
is on.

Note: gas cut off valve

activation only applies to
machines where the gas
cut off valve is activated by
the LTC controller. New 39x
machines have the gas cut
off valve activated by the
Impco controller.

Inputs and Outputs-Valve Currents
Traction
Traction Inputs and Outputs Valve Currents

For LP trucks only :

Solenoid throttle valve ranges
from 420 Ma to 890 Ma based
upon the input to the controller
from the accelerator pot. With
the truck idling the throttle
valve will be moving slightly
back and forth and the ma
reading will be fluctuating , but
will always be around 420 ma.
The maximum ma reading for
the throttle valve is determined
by the position of the
LPG Valve accelerator potentiometer and
will generally be around 890
12.5 ohms ma.

The LPG cut off valve is now

controlled by the Impco
controller, unless you have
an early version 39x
machine. Either way, the ma
reading is approx 690 ma.

Traction
Traction Inputs and Outputs Pedal Position Sensor

The pedal position sensor or

accelerator potentiometer as
commonly known can be viewed
as values in this screen. Follow
the procedures given to
determine if your accelerator pot
is working within its range.

If final stop UPot1A is out of

range, the value can be altered
by adjusting the stop screws on
the floor plate.

13
Linde Material Handling
Inputs and Outputs-Engine Data
Traction
Traction Inputs and Outputs Engine Data

Engine Data. The measured

engine speed is the Linde
speed sensor 1B1 located at the
flywheel housing. The air gap is
0.5 +/-0.3mm and is the actual
engine speed.

Engine speed to ECU is the

speed recorded from the VW
engine speed sensor. The
sensor is located by the engine
oil filter housing and is listed as
0B2.

The actual and Engine speed to

ECU must be in range of each
other.
On an LP truck, you will only see the
engine speed for traction being
displayed. This is because there is no
can connection between the LTC and
Impco controller. On a diesel truck, you
will read 3 rpm readings here.

14
Linde Material Handling
Inputs and Outputs-Temperature
Traction
Traction Inputs and Outputs Temperature

The temperature screen allows

you to monitor coolant and
hydraulic oil temperature. We
also display the m/a reading for
the fan by-pass valve. As the
coolant and hydraulic oil
temperature increases, the milli
amps for the fan will decrease.
As the milli amps decrease the
fan speed will increase.

Note :

Not all fans will respond in

1Y5 Coil Value exactly the same way. If you
have a decrease in milli amps
5 ohms and the fan does not turn, but
the truck does not over-heat,
we will allow the fan to
operate this way. As long as
the fan does turn on and
operate we do not have a
problem.

This is an output from the

controller after a hydraulic
function has been requested.

With the machine at idle, 2Y9

and Safety Relay will = 0. When
a hydraulic function is requested
, both will switch from a zero to
1. When the hydraulic function is
no longer required, both will drop
to zero. There is a delay in the
Safety Relay returning to zero
which is normal.

Traction behavior is where we

can customize the driving
behavior of the machine.

To slow the machine down, you

alter Pump angle %. You
reduce the pump angle, you
reduce the truck speed. You
can also lower engine rpm in
conjunction with pump angle to
obtain the driving behavior you
are looking for. There are no
set values.

Note: reduce pump angle

Max engine speed 1600-2700 before reducing rpm.

Max pump angle 24-100 Deceleration is set between

100 and 120. The higher the
Deceleration 100-120
number the greater the braking
Backward speed 20-100 force. The truck cannot be set
lower than 100.

Backward speed adjustment is

controlling the driving speed in
reverse direction.

When overrun mode (function)
is set to a value 1and the
engine load reaches a
predetermined point , the
traction is switched off in order
to gain lift power. A setting of 2
will cut both traction and lift to
prevent stalling.
Speed offset allows you to set a
higher engine speed while
driving in order to give you a
higher residual when driving
Function = 0 or 2
into heaps. This setting is trial
Offset rpm = 0-500 and error.
Switch for power increase is an

Traction
Traction Error Codes and Parameters LPG

When you change the LTC

controller on a 39x LPG
machine, all controllers come
set up for diesel engine.

On the earlier trucks, the LPG

shutoff valve was controlled by
the LTC Controller. So this
function had to be activated in
order for the truck to run.

The latest version of 39x has the

LPG solenoid driven from the
Impco Engine controller so this
function is not required. The
new controller and turn on
function is used with the E-
Controller from Impco.

For the speed acquisition , the

following is important. It only
applies to 392/393 trucks.

Up to serial number
H2X393S02008 will be 135
teeth. Anything after this serial
number will be 132 teeth. It is
important that this is carried out
so correct engine speed can be
recorded. If set incorrectly the
engine will still run but run poor.

On a 392 machine, the serial

number break is anything up to
H2X392S01562 uses the 132

Overrun Mode-Traction
Error Codes Parameters Traction Overrun Mode

When the machine is used for

waste paper applications, or
pushing into sand/fertilizers etc
the engine will cut off due to
the low flywheel mass.

When overrun mode (function)

is set to a value 1and the
engine load reaches a
predetermined point , the
traction is switched off in order
to gain lift power. A setting of 2
will cut both traction and lift to
prevent stalling.

Speed offset allows you to set

a higher engine speed while
Function = 0 or 2 driving in order to give you a
higher residual when driving
Offset rpm = 0-500 into heaps. This setting is trial
Power Increase = 0 or 1 and error.

Switch for power increase is an

option for customers who
seldom drive into heaps. This
switch would be fitted on the
armrest.

Only found on 394 H45-H50

models. The brake retarder
valve is activated when over
speed is detected by the
controller. The retarder valve
will operate between 0-
900m/amps and will reduce the
over speed condition by
dumping oil to tank.

rotation will be 450 milli amp
going to a maximum of 1150
which equals full travel

Cold Start Valve always start at 1600 with a
8 ohms cold engine. As the engine
temperature rises the milli
amps will drop. As the milli
amps drop the fan speed will
increase. To view the full
operation go to Inputs and
Outputs , Traction and Temp.
Cold start valve 1Y11 is
activated if temperature
drops below 5 degree
Celsius to aid cold starting of
the engine. It does this by
dumping hydraulic pressure
to tank during cranking.

Offline Diagnostics

Guided Diagnosis Start

Offline diagnostics is where we

can get a full description of a
fault code being shown on the
display unit. It does not matter
if you are in the LTC or VW
engine controller, the
procedure is the same.

Click on offline diagnosis, then

click the start button at the
bottom right hand corner.

See next page.

Traction

Once you are in this screen

you can select which control is
giving you the problem. For
instance, if a fault code (T231)
was being displayed , click on
traction. Once you click
traction, a list of codes will
appear.

By pressing the re-set button,

you will be directed back to the
first page of Pathfinder.

Fault Code T231

Fault code (T231) Traction.

What does it mean?

Read the code, what it is telling

us is the controller has detected
that the voltages supplied by
the master and monitoring
potentiometers has an incorrect
value. The potentiometer works
off 5v. In a neutral condition we
should read 2.5v and 2.5v. The
controller is telling us that this is
not happening so it throws the
fault code (T231). 49 and 32
are the controller plug
connections, this is where the
voltages are being read. Go to
Inputs and Outputs traction,
click voltages and you will see
49 and 32. Here we can verify
what voltage we have at the
accelerator potentiometer.

The key to tracing faults on a

39x machine is reading and
understanding the fault code.
