Process Safety Time Calculation – LOPA (SIF) 296

1. When HP Steam pressure reduces from 61.4 barg to 8 barg (LP steam design pressure), feed
water spray rate of 2420 kg/hr@125 °C is required to let down 10000 kg/hr of steam
temperature from 513 °C to 220 °C(Desuperheater outlet temperature as per P&ID).
2. Scenario modelled in HYSYS Dynamic simulation. TIC 100 is used to maintain Desuperheater
outlet temperature to 220 °C

3. Once TCV-83103 reaches its opening position of 60% and allows 2420 kg/he feed water to
desuperheater. Set point of TIC-100 changed from 220 °C to 400 °C (Maximum allwable skin
temperature of Carbon Steel Pipe).
4. Observed time taken to reach desuperheater outlet temperature to 400 °C
5. It is to be noted that after reaching to 400 °C in stream 3, pipe will starts heating up depending
on thermal conductive properties of pipe, but for safe design, time taken for stream 3
temperature rise is monitored.
Process Safety Time Calculation – LOPA (SIF) 296

6. Time Taken to reach Stream 3 temperature i.e., outlet of desuperheater from 220 °C to 400 °C
when TCV 83103 completely closes (0% opening) is 35 sec.

7. Assumptions:
- PCV 83101 and TCV 83103 CV’s and valve opening percentages (60% at required flow).
8. Valve Tight Shutoff requirement:
Downstream piping material damage is the effect of prolonged exposure. Leakage Class II as
defined by ANSI/FCI 70-2 (0.1% of rated valve capacity) or better tight-shut-off is considered
adequate
