PROBLEM SHEET
(Advance Mechanics of Materials) (Engr. Hafiz M. Rizwan)

Q # 1: The tensile stresses at a point are two mutually perpendicular planes are 120 N /mm 2 and
60 N/mm2. Determine the normal tangential and resultant stresses on a plane incline at 30° to the
axis of the minor tress.
Q # 2: A rectangular block of material is subjected to a tensile stress of 110 N/mm 2 on one
plane and a tensile stress of 47 N/mm 2 on the plane at right angles to the former. Each of the
above stresses is accompanied by a shear stress of 63 N/mm 2 and that associated with the former
tensile stress tends to rotate the block anticlockwise. Find:
1. The directions and magnitude of each of the principal stress.
2. Magnitude of the greatest shear stress.

SOLUTION
Q # 1: The tensile stresses at a point are two mutually perpendicular planes are 120 /mm 2 and
60 N/mm2. Determine the normal tangential and resultant stresses on a plane incline at 30° to the
axis of the minor tress.

Given Data:
Normal tensile stress, x = 120 N /mm2, y = 60 N /mm2

Inclination of plane,  = 30º

y = 60 N /mm2

30º x = 120 N /mm2

Normal Stress at any Plane ():

1+ 2 1−2
n = 2 + 2 cos2 + sin2

At  = 30º Where  = 0
120+60 120−60
n = 2 + 2 cos2(30) + (0)sin2(30)

180 60
n = 2 + 2 cos(60)

n = 90 + 30 (0.5)
n = 90 + 15
n = 105 N/ mm2 Ans.
Tangential stress at plane  = 30º Where  = 0
x− y
'xy = ( 2 ¿ sin2 - xycos2

120−60
'xy = ( 2
¿ sin2(30) - (0)xycos2
60
'xy = ( 2 ¿ sin60

'xy = ( 30 ¿ (0.8667)
'xy = 25.98 N/ mm2 Ans.
Resultant stress:

R = ( 2x' + 2xy' )0.5

R = ( 1052+ (25.98)2 )0.5

R = ( 11025 + 674.960 )0.5

R = ( 11669.9604 )0.5

R = 108.166 N/ mm2 Ans.

Q # 2: A rectangular block of material is subjected to a tensile stress of 110 N/mm 2 on one plane
and a tensile stress of 47 N/mm 2 on the plane at right angles to the former. Each of the above
stresses is accompanied by a shear stress of 63 N/mm 2 and that associated with the former tensile
stress tends to rotate the block anticlockwise. Find:
1. The directions and magnitude of each of the principal stress.
2. Magnitude of the greatest shear stress.

Given Data:
Major tensile stress, s1 = 110 N/ mm2

Minor tensile stress, s2 = 47 N/ mm2

Shear stress, t = 63 N/ mm2

(1).
Major principal stress is given by:

Major principal stress = s1+ s 2 / 2 + [( s 1 - s 2 / 2)2 + t 2]0.5

= 110 + 47 / 2 + [( 110 - 47 / 2)2 + 632]0.5
= 157 / 2 + [( 63 / 2)2 + 632]0.5

= 157 / 2 + [(31.5)2 + 632]0. 5

= 78.5 + [(31.5)2 + 632]0. 5

= 78.5 + [992.25 + 3969]0. 5

= 78.5 + 70.436

= 148.936 N/ mm2 Ans.

Minor principal stress is given by:

Minor principal stress = s1+ s 2 / 2 - [( s 1 - s 2 / 2)2 + t 2]0.5

= 110+ 47 / 2 - [( 110 - 47 / 2)2 + 632]0.5

= 110+ 47 / 2 - [( 110 - 47 / 2)2

+ 632]0.5
= 157 / 2 - [( 63 / 2)2 + 632]0.5
= 78.5 - [(31.5)2 + 632]0. 5
= 78.5 - [992.25 + 3969]0. 5
= 78.5 - 70.436

= 8.064 N/ mm2 Ans.

The directions of principal stresses are given by:
Tan2 = 2 / s1- s 2
= 2×63 /110-47
= 126 / 63
Tan2 = 2.0
2 = Tan-1 2.0
2 = 63 º 26’ or 243 º 26'

 = 31º 43' or 121 º 43' Ans

(2).
Magnitude of the greatest shear stress:

()max = 1/ 2 × [( s 1 - s 2 )2 + 4t 2]0.5

= 1/ 2 × [( 110 - 47 )2 + 4(63)2]0.5
= 1/ 2 × [( 63)2 + 4(63)2]0.5
= 1/ 2 × [( 63)2 + 4(63)2]0.5
= 1/ 2 × [( 3969 + 4 (3969)]0.5
= 1/ 2 × [( 3969 + 15876]0.5
= 1/ 2 × [19845]0.5
= 1/ 2 × 140.872

= 70.436 N/ mm2
Ans.
