Meester Jacob

Dutch farmers in traditional attire

Meester Jacob was written by Julius Röntgen, a German composer who moved to the
Netherlands 1877. The piece was published in a book called ‘Old Dutch farmer’s songs and
dances’ that was arranged for violin and piano.

Dutch farmers traditionally wore clogs in daily life, and

also while dancing. Clogs are wooden shoes.

Here’s some examples of how they danced in clogs,

and as a couple or in a line.
