AMITY SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE AND PLANNING, NOIDA
STUDIO BRIEF – B.Arch. Semester –VII (Batch 2017-22)
Course Title: Urban & Rural Planning
Code: ARCH 418, Semester : 7
Faculty Co-ordinator: Sandeep Kumar, Shradhanjalli Mishra
INTRODUCTION:
Site Planning is defined by Kevin Lynch as “the art of arranging structures on the land and shaping
the spaces between; an art linked to architecture, engineering, landscape architecture and city
planning.” (Site Planning)
Harvey M. Rubenstein defines it as “the art and science of arranging the uses of portions of land.
These uses are designated in detail by selecting and analyzing sites, forming land use plans,
organizing vehicular and pedestrian circulation, developing visual form and materials concepts,
readjusting the existing landforms by design grading, providing proper drainage and developing the
construction details necessary to carry out the projects” (A Guide to Site and Environmental
Planning,1980)
To make the students understand the location attributes of land parcels and their activity use
Project Site:
Urban location of one’s own choice and size (Neighbourhood level with a population varying between
5000-10000 persons)
Study Requirements
1. Review of the Master Plan / Zonal / Area plan in relation to the selected areas.
2. Appreciation / Analysis of ward/ Neighbourhood level data.
3. Perception of areas in terms of legal / illegal / authorized / unauthorized, Slums, Urban
Aesthetics.
1
Urban & Rural Planning - Seventh Semester (Batch 2017-22)
4. Social Categorizations of people - Type of population living, people’s perception about area and
its planning problems.
5. Land use including Agriculture land and land use conflicts, extent (%) of broad land use such as
commercial, industrial, residential, institutional and recreational.
6. Extent of formal / informal activities present in the area including their location and conflicts.
7. General land tenure of the area and land value for different uses.
8. Major types of transport, type of roads, hierarchy of roads, type of transport modes used.
9. Amenities: Location of Social and Physical infrastructure and their problems as perceived by
local population. Look for specific infrastructure such as Water supply, drainage (water logging
areas), waste collection and disposal system, sanitation, etc.
10. Environmental Issues: Open Spaces – Availability and extent of open space to built-up area,
garbage disposal, encroachment (through photographic evidences and sketches).
11. Locating the study area in the zone, city and regional context with respect to all the above
aspects.
Objectives:
To understand the site potentials and constraints and optimum utilization of site.
To understand the three dimensional space of the site and the associated locational
advantages, human activities and the regulations that are assigned to a particular site.
To understand the implication and application of various standards / norms (which varies from
location to location)required for site development in a given context.
To apprise the students with an understanding of the intricacies and interface between
various variables such as soil conditions, topography, environmental dimensions, location,
spatial standards applicable to the site, etc.
Project Site:
Urban location of one’s own choice and size (Neighborhood level with a population varying between
5000-10000 persons)
Design Requirements
Site Analysis:
a. Site Context
b. Natural site features- Physiology, landform, soil, drainage, topography, slope, surface
and ground water, vegetation, climate etc
Demography and Socio Economic Factors

development and play;
Project Deliverables:
Present a program for action to realize the design vision through:
1. Study of the selected site with all its parameters described, such as history, environmental
reality, potential for development and a design vision.
2. Conceptual frameworks.
3. Drawings and diagrams of the proposal.
4. Critical details of the proposed action in a time frame for implementation of the scheme.
