Spanish Colonization in the Philippines

I can say that Spanish colonization in the Philippines is the most influenced colonization in our

country although they didn’t handle the Philippines very well They spread Christianity in our

people and I’m thankful that they taught us about their religion because if Magellan didn’t land

in Leyte, most of the Filipinos religion maybe Islam. They are the most influenced because the

Spanish invested heavily in education and that’s why by 1898, Philippines literacy rate was the

second highest in Asia after Japan, and on par with Spain, and higher than Mexico or Brazil. If

they didn’t invest much in our education, we are in the average people and won’t recognize in

some country. Spanish also taught us how their government works in their country. They taught

us about how justice works in our country and we inherited some of their teachings and now

we’re using it to implement laws, follow rules and regulation, etc. Spain has a left a profound

and irreversible imprint on current Filipino culture: Catholicism, Roman alphabet, Spanish

architecture, Hispanic surnames, the name 'Philippines', Spanish cuisine - leche flan, pan de sal

etc. and even linguistically- Abogado, Bombero, Iglesia etc. Even if the Spanish government

didn't develop the Philippines, Philippines would still be better off for two reasons. It would have

spared the the heavy damage and loss of life as a result of the American invasion in 1898.

Secondly, a Philippines under Spain would have allowed the Japanese Navy access to its ports

(like Thailand), that would have spared Philippines from the wrath of a full scale invasion by

Japan. If the Spaniards didn’t ruled Philippines for 333 years, Filipinos won’t fight for their right

like what our heroes did i.e. Jose Rizal, Antonio Luna, Andres Bonifacio, Emilio Aguinaldo, etc.

We won’t taste what It feels like to be free and rule our country. Sadly, our government failed to

maintain and improve what the Spanish did to our country and now we’re in the developing

country but still, some of the higher position has a bad history i.e. corruption.
