The Universal set is the set that contains all
objects under consideration.
Example:
Identify the universal set of set A = counting numbers less than 10
and set B = set of positive even numbers less than 20.
A= { 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1}
B ={ 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18}
A= { 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1}
B ={ 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18}
D= { 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9}
n {D} = { 9 }
TRY this:
Which of the following are well-defined set?
Answer; 1, 3,5
c . Identify the elements, subsets and
cardinality of the given set.
D= { first five positive even numbers}
Elements: 2, 4, ___, 8, __
Subsets: { 2} , { 2,4} { } , { } , { }
Cardinality: n ( C) =_____

lowercase
letters will be
used to refer
to any
elements of a

U= { }
n(A)= { }
n(B)= { }

A set can be defined in two ways:
Roster or Listing Method- the set can be defined by listing or
enumerating all its elements, separated by commas and enclosed within
braces.
For instance:
B = {a, b, c, d, e}
C = {2, 4, 6, 8, 10}
Descriptive Method - it is stating in words the
elements of the set.
For instance:
B= {set of first letter in an English alphabet}
C= {set of even numbers less than ten}
▪ Write the following sets in descriptive form
▪ A = {2, 4, 6, 8}
▪ B= { 3, 6, 9, 12 , 15}
▪ C = { 1, 3, 5, 7, 9}
Example: 1
M= {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7}
Example:2
A= { 101,102,103,…}
Example :3 Example: 4
P= {blue, red, white} and Q= {1, 2, 3}
B= { m, n, p, q, r} and
D= { n, p ,r, m, q} P ͠ Q
are equivalent sets
B=D

 If A = {1, 3, 5, 7, 9} and B = { 2, 4, 6, 8},
 Complement of set A is the set of elements in the universal set that are not in set A.
 Example: if U = { m, n, p, q, r} and A ={ m, p , r}, then the complement of A, denoted by
A΄ = {n, q}.

Joint Sets- two sets with common
elements
