The word “SWOT” consists of four words, which are stands for Strengths, weaknesses,
opportunities, and threats, respectively.
Through the “SWOT” Analysis technique one can analyze the present condition and
performance of a given organization and can prepare plans for the future.
In the SWOT Analysis of UBL, the following points can be discussed in brief
2.3.1. Strengths
Its Strengths are as follows.
 Having a reputation for high customer banking services.
 3rd largest Bank of Pakistan
 Easy asses to branch locality.
 Large network.
 Professional and skilled management.
 Well, co-coordinated branch office system.
 Experienced personnel.
 Strong loyal customer group.
 Excellent competitive skills.
 The sound level of deposits.
 Excellent promotional and marketing campaigns.
2.3.1.2. Weakness
Weaknesses are something organization lakes at doing that. For UBL these are.
Customer having accounts with small amounts are not given the same attention given to those
with large amounts.
 Most of the employees are overloaded with the work and promotion is also not timely.
 Low salaries for staff.
 Political inter presence.
 The low market value of the bank’s stock.
 Bad recovery of overdue advances.
iii
 The un-satisfactory working condition of branches.
 No availability of sophisticated equipment in branches.
 Inefficient system of recruiting and selecting personnel.
2.3.1.3. Opportunities
An external situation, which an organization can benefit from, is called opportunity.
 Increase the serving customer group.
 Due to the efficient and experienced management group, UBL can improve and
expand its foreign operations successfully.
 Enter new markets.
 Increase product line to serve a large range of customers needs.
 The hiring of well-qualified personnel in the workforce.
 Deployment of sophisticated technology in offices and branches.
2.3.1.4. Threats
 Increase the number of new local and foreign banks.
 Low morale of employees.
 Political interference in the affairs of the bank.
 Lake of consistency in policies due to political instability.
 Low saving rated in the country.
 Economic recession in the country.
This “SWOT” Analysis is a mirror to the bank o its present condition. From this analysis, we
can conclude that the bank has done some professional changes in its banking system. The
management can develop elaborated strategy planes for capitalization the available
opportunities. One area where the bank has done some work is the improvement in customer
services.
The bank should maintain the principle of professional management and adhere to the sound
and sophisticated banking rules and regulations in order to build the confidence of people in
the institution
2.4 Environmental Analysis
2.4.1. Political
The current situation of the government in Pakistan is directly affecting the policies of banks.
However, UBL tries hard to keep its business away from politics but it is not an easy task.
UBL has no accounts of political leaders or parties. However, its Customer Service
Department faces peer pressure from such political parties.
As UBL is trapped in dual sanctions from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and from the
European Union so the changing political environment is not so beneficial for the bank to

operate freely. The changing policies of the government affect SBP which in return affects
the UBL rules and policies.
The government of Pakistan has privatized most of the banks. The number of government-
owned banks has declined constantly, so these changes directly affect UBL.
2.4.2. Economical
The economy of any country has a deep impact on any financial organization. Economic
indicators include Gross Domestic Product (GDP), inflation, the balance of payment, the debt
of the government. These below graphs will explain how economic conditions of Pakistan are
adversely affecting the banking system of Pakistan.
The pitiable economy of Pakistan and the unstable government is adversely affecting UBL
and its different departments; recently UBL has redundant many of its employees. The
economy of Pakistan is very poor. Due to poor economy businesses are showing low profits
and Pakistan stock market is in great danger. Pakistan’s foreign debts are rising day by day,
so such a situation is a huge challenge for UBL to survive. Due to financial crisis in Pakistan,
the management of UBL has to face stressful situations and also the working environment. At
present, the UBL is not extending loans but recovering the existing ones.
2.4.3. Technological
The current rapid growth of technology has a major impact on UBL Bank. The UBL Bank is
adapting and introducing new technology as soon as possible for its customers. There is a
more need of training the entire staff and have to make aware the customers of new
technology. Technological changes and its adaptation is very necessary for UBL Bank’s
business volume.
2.4.4. Socio-Cultural
UBL has been influenced by socio-cultural factors. At present most of the European countries
are keeping their eyes on Pakistan as being the terrorist country, so people of Pakistan are
emotionally getting affected by it. Most of the foreign investments have been stopped in
Pakistan. Pakistani people are traditionalists who do not like the modern banking
environment of UBL. Some of the customers do not use ATMs they still prefer cash counters,
so these kinds of socio-cultural factors affect the banking environment and its operations.
2.4.5. Natural
The UBL Bank promotes environmental friendly activities through its business procedures.
The UBL Bank also promotes to not harm natural resources and to use them properly as its
possible.
2.4.6. Political and legal

CHAPTER 3

CONCLUSION, RECOMMENDATIONS, AND SUGGESTIONS

1.1. Conclusion

United Bank Limited (UBL) is one of the largest banks in Pakistan and ranked 1 to 3 in Asia.
When I got a deep study about this bank, it was very difficult for me to check out the key
factors which make UBL, “THE BEST”. A huge network, the largest number of branches, it
is very difficult to control, organize and keep the institute in a progressive way. When I
studied about UBL, I am on the point that top-level management, policymakers had a huge
contribution to UBL but the most important role is played by the human resource department
(HR).
As the Bank is the Financial Institution and its major dealings are in deposit and lending but
without Human Resource nothing is possible. As human resource is the most important in
any Organization and as said earlier human resource department plays a vital role for UBL.
There is a specific structure of HR Deptt that is called human resource management (HRM)
in the organization and it has a particular process of HRM. The role of HRM is just like a hub
to manage its human capital in order to meet the organizational goals and objectives. HRM
process in the organization involves all the stakeholders to have their input in organizing,
planning, developing and controlling the human resource. Human resource depth. also,
forecast future HR needs (demand), forecast future internal/external candidates (supply).
Monitor and evaluate results and forecasting HR requirements. There are different methods
and approaches used to forecast HR need and demands.
1.2. Recommendations

vi
Since the Bank was established in 1959 and has completed 50 years of its life successfully. It
is strongly recommended that bank management should pay special attention to this
important issue for mental satisfaction and better future of the employees. No doubt the
employees are satisfied with the bank’s present management.
 The counter service has to improve further for customer satisfaction, through modern
facilities for rapid delivery of financial products & services.
 Staff retirement benefits should be introduced.
1.3. Suggestions

During my internship at the UBL, I find out week areas that require improvements for the
long-term benefit of the organization. These suggestions and recommendation are as follows:
The facility of foreign currency should be given to its clients at all branches.
 The bank should start more promotional activities.
 The bank should start a business of credit cards to compete with competitors.
 Though CD, PLS, and advances are computerized, in my view, all operations of the
bank must have such advanced technology.
