TITLE: Antacid Effectiveness

PROBLEM STATEMENT: While watching the news, June came across two different commercials promoting
two different antacids, namely Alka-Seltzer and Tums. Both commercials promote the antacids as being the best
choice on the market. June sat in her chair wondering which was indeed the better of the two. Plan and design
an experiment to answer June’s thought.
Hypothesis (conditional tense): A prediction of the outcome of the experiment. The statement/hypothesis
MUST be testable.

Aim:

Apparatus/Materials: list ALL possible apparatus/materials that you may use to conduct the experiment e.g.
Water, nail, petri dish…

Method (present tense):

1. Must be written in present tense and in the form of an instruction eg.

Measure 50 cm3 of water by using a measuring cylinder.
2. Do not use any pronouns eg. I, You, We.
3. Use a numbering format to write the method.
4. Must mention the use of a control in the method.
5. Must include a time period for experiment.
6. Must state what kind of measurements should be taken for observations.

Variables:

(i) Manipulating variable – refers to the factor that is causing an effect or change in the experiment.
(independent variable).
(ii) Responding variable- refers to the factor that is being affected in the experiment. (output variable or
dependent variable)
(iii) Controlled variable – the variable that must be kept the same in all experimental setups.

Expected Results (conditional tense):

What is likely to be the outcome of the experiment after it is conducted? Describe what you would expect to
observe in each experimental setup and the reason(s) for your expectations.

Treatment of data: Explain how data should be collected and recorded. Include any table format that could
possibly be used. Or instructions of graph, charts etc.
Limitations (conditional tense): Any factor/condition which could have negatively affected the results. Should
be written in the conditional tense.

Precautions (conditional tense): Actions to take to avoid injury or harm during experiment. Should be written
in the conditional tense.
