Glossary of Terms used in Information Technology

Booting- is the startup sequence of a computers operating system when it is turned


on.

Bug- mistake or unwanted piece of code that stops a program or website from
working like it should.

Byte- is made up of 8 bits and is the smallest unit of storage.

Capacitor- is a passive two-terminal electric component used to store energy


electrostatically in an electric field.

Collaboration- is a joint effort of multiple individuals or work groups to


accomplish a task or project by contributing it over the network.

Computer Fraud- is the act of using a computer to take or alter electronic data, to
take computer information without the user’s permission.

Controller Area Network (CAN) - is a serial connections of microcontrollers that


connects devices, sensors, actuators in a system or sub-system for a real-time
control application.

Cookies- are small files that are stored on a user’s computer. They are designed to
hold a modest amount of data and can be access by the user.

E-Commerce- Electric Commerce or EC is the purchasing and selling of goods


and services, or the transmitting of funds and data over a network, primarily the
Internet.

Electronic Surveillance- is the monitoring of a home or business using electronic


devices.

Gigabyte- 1024 megabytes, 1,048,576 kilobytes, 1,073,741,824 bytes.


Hertz- equals one cycle per second in frequencies and electric waves it is used in
the monitors refresh rate and in computer processing.

HTTP- Hypertext Transfer Protocol is the foundation of communication in the


World Wide Web (WWW).

Kilobyte- 1024 bytes.

Local Area Network (LAN) - is a group of computers or associated devices that


share a common communication line or wireless link to a server.

Malware- software which is specifically designed to disrupt, damage, or gain


authorized access to a computer system.

Megabyte- 1024 kilobytes, 1,048,576 bytes.

Metropolitan Area Network (MAN) - it interconnects users with computer


resources in regions larger than (CAN) but smaller than (WAN).

Motherboard- a printed circuit board containing the principal components of a


computer or other devices with connectors for other boards to be slotted in.

Network- a network is a group of two or more computers connected by some form


of communication medium.

Pixels- is the basic unit of programmable color on a computers display or I a


computer image.

Processor- is the logic circuitry that responds to and processes the basic
instructions that drive a computer.

Search Engine – a program that searches for and identifies items in a database
using key words or just typing the item.
Social Networking- is the practice of expanding the number of one’s business or
social contacts by making connections through individuals, often through Social
Media sites.

Teleconferencing – is telephone meeting of two or more participant in a more


sophisticated and technologic call than a normal two way phone call.

Telemarketing- is a method of direct marketing in which a sales person allows a


person to order online for goods.
