The first thing we should talk is that API. What is API?

API is American Petroleum

Institute, which is founded in 1919. This is the largest US trade association for the oil
and gas industry. It consists 650 companies in manufacturing, refining and distributing
According to API, crude oil is divided into 3 main types:
 Light crudes normally have a low density (e.g. below 900 kg/m3), and API
gravity of 30° or more.
 Medium crudes
 Heavy crudes: API gravity of less than 20°.
 These oils show considerable differences in their chemical and physical properties:
The same standard, heavy crudes typically require heating before measurement.
Degree of API refers to the weight of the oil relative to water

According to the degree of API, we can suggest that:
 A: Medium crudes
 B: Light crudes
 C: Heavy crudes
 Light crudes normally have a low density (below 900 kg/m 3). It has low viscosity,
low specific gravity, high light hydrocarbons and low wax content
 Light crude oil has a higher market price than heavy crude because it produces
more gasoline and diesel after the treatment and separation process.
