Physical Assessment
A focused history and physical assessment is critical to identify accurate
interventions that need to be carried out and to properly diagnose cervical
cancer.

i. Physical Assessment 1
 General appearance - Patient may display feelings of sadness
and hopelessness. Patient may be underweight in appearance
with a body build of ectomorph. Patient may also verbalize
sentiments of fatigue upon assessment.
 Vital signs - Increase in blood pressure may manifest since high
blood pressure is a common side effect of cancer treatment,
particularly chemotherapy and targeted therapy.
 Skin - Poor skin turgor can be noted. Swelling legs edema are
evident upon assessment and palpation since cervical cancer can
spread to lymph nodes in the area between the hip bones
(pelvis). Cancer cells can also stop lymph fluid from draining
away. This might lead to swelling in legs due to fluid build-up.
Also, presence of genital warts can be observed in the patient’s
vulvar area. They may be very small and the color of the skin or
slightly darker. The top of the growths may resemble a cauliflower
and may feel smooth or slightly bumpy to the touch. They may
occur as a cluster of warts, or just one wart.
 Abdomen - Abdominal distention or feeling of bloatedness may
be noted because cervical cancer can cause the cervix to swell
into the abdominal cavity, compressing the gastrointestinal tract
and stomach to cause or even acid reflux. In addition, upon
auscultation, hypoactive bowel sounds are heard which often
indicate constipation.

ii. Physical Assessment 2

 Abdomen – The patient’s abdomen’s skin is intact with no scars
and lesions. Abdominal distention or the feeling of bloatedness is
noted due to the swelling in the abdominal cavity. This is due to
the cervical cancer that causes cervix to swell, compressing the
gastrointestinal tract and stomach that causes acid reflux.
 Genitourinary – Upon inspecting the pubic area, it was observed
that there was a pale, watery brown, and foul-smelling discharge
observed. This is due to the lox oxygen level of the uncontrollable
tumor growth noted.

iii. Physical Assessment 3

 Musculoskeletal System – good posture, complains radiating
pain in the lower back that causes inability to walk properly and
movement of upper extremities are coordinated
