Global issue:
The global issue the Individual Oral will be focused on is Culture, Identity and Community. In particular the manners
in which the texts explore family dynamics, through the gender roles which exist in communities and how these
impact individuals and their identity, and their societies as a whole. The global issue will additionally relate to
progressive feminism, and its relation to female ambition beyond the traditional gender roles of being primary
caregivers.
Texts chosen
Literary: A passage from the last scene of Henrik Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House” published in 1879.

Non- Literary: An article published in the Atlantic “When a Promotion Leads to Divorce” written by Derek
Thompson, in January 2020.

Notes for the oral (maximum of 10 bullet points) :

Article

1. Progressive feminism: A focus on 'the politics of gender', an emphasis on the power relations
between men and women, rather than a narrow focus on 'women's issues.
2. Metaphors, emphasises power relations and the romanticised notion of traditional gender roles –
