INTRODUCTION

Hazing, as used in this Act, is an initiation rite or practice as prerequisite

for admission into membership in a fraternity, sorority or organization by
placing the result, neophyte or applicant in some embarrassing or humiliating
situation such as forcing him to do menial, silly, foolish and other similar tasks
or activities or otherwise subjecting him to physical or psychological suffering
or injury.

There are more than 17 sororities and fraternities situated in the Philippines
Diliman campus. Each one dedicated to uphold their existence and honor
through producing quality citizens. And each quality citizens, to be essential
blocks in nation building, academic excellence and community development.
However, normal students do not easily become part of a brotherhood or a
sorority. Various initiation rites and admission prerequisites are necessary to
test, build-up and welcome recruits, commonly known as hazing.

Hazing as defined by Republic Act No. 8049, which serves as an act

regulating hazing and other forms of initiation rites in organizations and setting
penalties, is an initiation rite or practice as a prerequisite for admission into
membership in a fraternity, sorority, or organization by placing the recruit,
neophyte or applicant in some embarrassing or humiliating situations such as
forcing him/her to do menial, silly, foolish and similar tasks or activities or
otherwise subjecting him/her to physical or psychological suffering or injury.

Once again, upon recent years, the existence of the fraternity community
was questioned when a National College of Public Administration and
Governance (NCPAG) student, named Cris Anthony Mendez, died while in
fraternity hazing rites of the Sigma Rho fraternity. Various television reports
arose nationwide that caused great buzz to question the concept of hazing.

1
I find the concept of physical hazing very unnecessary especially as I am not
part of a fraternity. It is not about the fear of physical pain, but the possibility
of death in the process. One bad hit with a piece of wood can hit a nerve and
paralysis is a chance to take.

The main purpose of this study is to explain the causes and effects of
Fraternity Hazing to the teenagers and Filipino Youth on the Philippines.

The paper also aims to enhance awareness of the importance of

preventing the existence of Fraternity Hazing in the Philippine and some
Universities. It also aims to promote programs to solve the problems.

This paper will discuss the overall implications of hazing that facing of
our teenagers in such school that have fraternities. It will also show the forms
of sororities that affects our community. It will discuss the case and problems
against the hazing of fraternities or sororities on our School Universities.

2
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The Anti-Hazing Act of 1995,also known as Republic Act No.8o49 is a

national legistation in the Philippines regulating the act of hazing and other
initiation rites in fraternities and sororities in the country. It prohibits and
penalizes physical harm and violence in such practices.

This Research Paper aims to answer the following questions:

1. What is fraternity hazing?

2. Why is hazing a problem?
3. Who is the most victims of hazing?
4. What are the effects of fraternity hazing to teenagers today?
5. How can the teenagers avoid to join in such fraternities?
