Mooree’s Mesh

Diagram
MOOREE’S MESH DIAGRAM

Lucien de Coster developed this analysis, in the year 1939.

LAND MARKS USED BY MOOREES:

a) Porion – The center of the shadow cast by the ear rods.

b) Orbitale – obtained by palpation and indicated by metal pointer
c) Posterior orbital limit – The most posterior line on the bony orbital
opening as seen on the lateral each.
d) Pterygomaxillary fissure: At its lowest tip.
e) Zygomatic Process: At its lowest point.
f) Maxillary and mandibular central incisors – At their spices and incisal
edges.
g) Mesiobuccal cusp tip of maxillary first molar.
h) Lowest and most anterior point of the curvature of the bony chin
between Pogonion and Gnathion.
i) The Sella Nasion is used on the mesh diagram for orientation of the face.

CONSTRUCTION OF THE MESH DIAGRAM:

1. Nasion and Sella are marked and the SN line is drawn.

2. Line A – is drawn from Nasion at an angle of to the SN plane.
3. Line B – is drawn at right angles to line A from Nasion.
4. Line C – is drawn at right angles to the line A and tangent to the
lowest point on the bony chin.
5. Line D – Measure the distance between N and S. Now mark a point
on line B at the place equal to the N – S line. Now divide the
distance into 3 equal parts. From the point marked make another
point on the C line at the place equal to 1/3 of the S-N line

measurement. From this point drop a perpendicular paralleled to
the line A until it meets line C. This line is called line D.
6. Divide line A and B into 4 equal parts and drop perpendicular
connecting A to C.
7. Divide line A and B into 4 equal parts and connect three points so
as to form a grid of 16 rectangles.
8. Measure the length and width of one of the rectangles.
9. The following land marks are now added – two points where the
vertical mesh lines intersect the palate and one point where the
vertical mesh line intersect the base of the mandible.

IMPORTANCE OF THE MESH DIAGRAM:

In view of the great variation in facial dimension found in persons with

normal occlusion, the greatest value of the mesh diagram is in comparing profile
radiographs in longitudinal studies of individual growth and in determining
changes brought about by growth and by orthodontic therapy during and after
treatment.
