CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1. Background

The meaning of the hardness of a material is different for different groups of fields of
science. In the metallurgical field the value of hardness is material resistance to temporary
penetration. So many concepts of material violence are understood by science groups, even
so they can. Hardness testing is a relatively easy test to determine the mechanical properties
of a material. This mechanical property is very closely related to the performance of a
material, if the mechanical properties are good then the performance of a material is good
too. Although the measurement is only done at a particular point, or area, the value of
violence is valid enough to express the strength of a material. By doing a hard test, the
material can be easily classified as a ductile or brittle material. Hard testing can also be used
as one method to determine the effect of heat or cold treatment on a material. Material that
has experienced cold working, hot working, and heat treatment, can be seen a description of
changes in strength, by measuring the surface hardness of a material. Therefore, with
hardness testing we can easily carry out quality control of the material to determine the
quality of the material being tested so that it can be used or used on objects according to its
capacity. Therefore this hardness testing practicum is very important to be done in order to
understand and be able to do material hardness testing, and also be able to calculate the
hardness value of the material being tested.

2. Problem Formulation

The problems that arise based on background, are as follows:

1. how to find out the hardness value of a metal material to the normalizing heat
treatment?
2. how to find out the hardness value of a metal material without treatment?
3. how to find out the hardness value of a metal material to the hardening heat
treatment?
3. Aims of Experiment
As for the purpose of the experiment to be carried out is as follows:
1. to find out the hardness value of a metal material against normalizing heat treatment.

2. to find out the hardness value of a metal material without treatment.

3. to find out the hardness value of a metal material to the hardening heat treatment.
