Guidelines for Students on Online Assessment and Examination

1. Introduction
Due to the current pandemic situation, the University has embarked on online teaching as per
directives of the government and Higher Education Commission. NED University has devised
a comprehensive policy on online teaching and assessment. Spring 2020 semester has started
and the students are experiencing a hybrid learning experience comprising of recorded video
lectures and live sessions.
This guide has been prepared for students to guide them through the online assessment
procedures for sessional assessment, mid-term examination and end of semester (final)
examination.

2. Mode of Assessment

i. The over assessment would be based on Online Computer based Electronic Testing and
Online Examination.
ii. The overall assessment of a student would incorporate Sessional, Midterm Exams and
End of Semester Examination with the corresponding weightages as given below.

iii. All the assessments will be carried out online within G Suite environment using Google
Classroom and Google Meet.
iv. Students will be required to login using their respective G Suite ID into Classrooms and
Google Meet Sessions at scheduled times.

3. Sessional Assessment/ Activities

Sessional assessment will comprise of a number of activities with a combined weightage of


50% (as summarized in Table 1).

4. Conduct of Sessional Activities

i. Online Quiz: During the online teaching semester, online quizzes will be conducted in
Google Classroom. All the quizzes will be set up in such a manner that the results are
communicated instantly to the students. All the quizzes will be announced at least 1 week
prior to the scheduled activity.
ii. Homework Assignment: Students will be assigned homework activities during the
semester using Google Classroom assignment feature. The students will be provided
sufficient time to submit their work using Google Classroom only. Homework assignments
will be graded and returned to the student online with 10 days. Students are required to
ensure the originality of work and avoid plagiarism. Similarity index of less than 20% will
be acceptable.
iii. Open ended Problem(s): The students will be assigned open ended problem(s) to promote
critical thinking and/or address complex engineering activities. Open ended problem(s)
will be graded using specified rubrics.
iv. Viewing of Recorded Lectures: Students are provided sufficient time for viewing of
lectures before the live session each week (7 to 10 days). The viewing logs will be used to
award 10% marks on pro rata basis.
v. Live Sessions: Students will be awarded 10% sessional marks based on their attendance in
live sessions on pro rata basis.

5. Mid-term examination

i. Mid-term examination covering contents from Week 01 to 05 for courses with practicals
and Week 01 to 07 for courses without practicals would be based on Online Computer
based Electronic Testing and Online Examination as per announced schedule by the
University.
ii. The duration of mid-term examination will be 2 hours.

iii. Students will be required to login using their G Suite IDs into their Google Classrooms and
Google Meet Sessions at least 15 minutes prior to the Start time as per schedule.
iv. It would be a composite exam comprising of MCQs, long question, numerical-based
questions, short-answer type questions etc.
v. Wherever needed, the students will be required to scan/ upload handwritten solution in
Google Classroom. It is recommended to use Google Drive on mobile which has a built in
document scanner to scan and upload handwritten work, if required. There are many free
scanning mobile apps for Android and iOS. Scanned document should be legible.

6. End of Semester (Final) examination


i. End of Semester examination (ESE) covering contents from Week 06 to 10 for courses
with practicals and Week 08 to 14 for courses without practicals would be based on Online
Computer based Electronic Testing and Online Examination as per announced schedule by
the University.
ii. The duration of ESE (final examination) will be 3 hours.
iii. ESE will be based on the same procedure as Midterm examination.

7. Responsibilities of students
i. The students will be responsible to maintain integrity of the examination/ assessment
process and abide by the rules and regulation of the University.
ii. They would comply with the “Ethics Policy” as announced by the University. It will be
responsibility of the student to read and understand the policy, and provide an undertaking
in this regard.
iii. The students will be required to submit the following undertaking at the beginning of each
assessment.
“I guarantee that this submission is based on my independent work without any
unauthorized help. This activity is completed with full adherence to the “Ethics
Policy” of the University. I understand that any breach would result in
disciplinary action against me as per University rules.”
iv. It is responsibility of the students to make adequate arrangements for unforeseen problems.
For example electricity breakdowns or internet connectivity issues. The same may be
communicated to the invigilator during the assessment activity.
v. It is recommended to use Laptops with adequate amount of battery to offset any electricity
breakdowns.
vi. To avoid internet connectivity issues, mobile data package may be subscribed as standby
arrangement.
vii. Under any extra ordinary circumstances, the student should contact the concerned class
advisor immediately.
