Overview
Text File is a text editing program you can use to create new documents and open, view and edit existing
documents.
Within Text File you can manipulate data in a file and then directly open the file/import the data in a Text
Importer document view.

Text files are managed via the File menu of the Well or Project application window.

Creating New
To create a new text file
1. Use one of the following methods to create the text file:
— On the “New Tab” on page 1-15, click on the Text File New option
— Select File > New > New Text File
An untitled text file is displayed in a tab window.
2. Start entering text.

Opening
When a file is selected via the New Tab or File > Open option, it is opened as a text file, regardless of the
file type as indicated by its extension such as .pdf, docx and so on, the file will be treated as a rich text file.
When a file is selected using drop and drag ,the extension of the file is interrogated and as a result; a Geolog
file will be opened in the appropriate view (e.g., a *.xplot file will be opened in a Xplot view and a *.layout

file will be opened in a Layout view) and other files will be opened with the appropriate program where
possible (e.g., *.pdf files will be displayed by Acrobat Reader).

To open a text file


• Use one of the following methods to open a text file:
— On the “New Tab” on page 1-15 click on the Text File Open option
— Select File > Open > Open Text File
— From the “Files Window” on page 3-8, drag and drop the file onto the central document area
of the application window or double-click on the file
— From a Windows Explorer window, drag and drop the file onto the central document area
of the application window
The selected text file is displayed in a tab window.

Editing Documents

The editing and formatting options are available via the Edit menu, right-click shortcut menu and the
buttons on the Edit toolbar (as shown in Fig. 2).

Changing Text

To change text in a document


1. Select the text to be changed
2. Perform the required action:.

• Right-click and select Cut from the shortcut menu displayed.

Selecting Text

As per most text editing programs, text can be selected using the following methods; by double-clicking,
dragging the cursor across the block of text and holding down the Shift button while clicking to select
contiguous blocks of text.
Additionally, all the text in a text file document view can be selected or deselected.

Finding and Replacing

Text can be quickly located and replaced when the Find feature is enabled. When selected the Find pane is
displayed at the top of the Text File window, as shown in Fig. 3. The components of the Find pane are
detailed in Table 1-1, "Find section (of Text File) components" on page 1-6.
When you search for text, you can customize the search by considering case, matching whole words only, or
using wildcards or regular expressions. When Geolog finds the text, you can replace the text or continue
searching for other occurrences of the text.

Find Type the characters or words you want to find or click the
dropdown arrow and select from the list of previous
search criteria.

Component Description
Replace with Type the replacement text.

The Options button enables you to perform advanced searches for text in a
file.
Case Sensitive Select this option and Geolog will perform a case
sensitive search, that is, an exact match of the case for
each letter typed in the Find field.
Match Whole Word Select this option and only whole word occurrences of the
word typed in the Find field will be searched for.
Normal The default search option.
Wildcard Wildcards let you search for character patterns.

Select this option to enable a wildcard search.

Use the question mark (?) wildcard character to


represent one character in your search criteria and the
asterisk (*) to represent multiple characters in your
search criteria.

Regular Expression When the Regular Expression option is selected the value
in the Find field is treated as a pattern and the search is
performed on this pattern. For example, if you type c.*E.*
with Regular Expression selected, then corEVAL would
be a match to this pattern.
Select this option to enable a regular expression search.
Note: You should be familar with Regular Expression
concepts and syntax to effectively make use this option.

Find and Replace Buttons

Finds the next occurrence of the find string.


Find Next
Finds the previous occurrence of the find string.
Find Previous
Finds and replaces the next occurrence of the find string.
Find and Replace
Replaces all occurrences of the find string.
Replace All

To find specific text


1. Do one of the following to display the Find pane:
— Press Ctr+F

— Click the Find button
— Select Edit > Find
— Right-click and select Find from the shortcut menu displayed

2. Optionally, click the button and select one of the advanced search options as detailed in
Table 1-1, "Find section (of Text File) components" on page 1-6.
3. In the Find box, type the characters or words you want to find.

4. Click the Find Next button.

To find and replace text


1. Do one of the following to display the Find pane:
— Press Ctr+F

— Click the Find button


— Select Edit > Find
— Right-click and select Find from the shortcut menu displayed

2. Optionally, click the button and select one of the advanced search options as detailed in
Table 1-1, "Find section (of Text File) components" on page 1-6.
3. In the Find box, type the characters or words you want to find.
4. In the Replace with box, type the replacement text.

5. To replace a single instance, click the Find and Replace button.

To replace all instances of the text, click the Replace All button.

Go To A Specific Line

To go to a specific line in the file


1. Select one of the following options to display the Goto Line Number dialog box:
— Press Ctrl+L

— Click the Go To Line button


— Select Edit > Go to Line
— Right-click and select Go to Line from the shortcut menu displayed

Applying Word Wrap

To apply Word Wrap


• Select Edit > Word Wrap

Changing Font Size

To change the font size

• Click the required button; to decrease the font size or to increase the font size.

Tools

Open Text Importer


For your convenience, once you have finished manipulating data in the Text File document view, you can
directly import the data into a Text Importer document view – see “Custom Text Importer” on page -1 for
more information about the Text Importer view.

To display the text in a text importer view

1. Click the Import button or select Tools > Import.


The data is automatically loaded into the Text Importer document view.
