Design
Introductory Message
For the Facilitators:
Welcome to the subject Arts 6 of Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) module
for the lesson Concepts on the Use of Software in Digital Painting and Graphic
Design.

This module was shared, designed, and reviewed by educators from public
institutions to assist the learners. The teacher or facilitator worked hard for the
learners to meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming
their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and
independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this
also aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking
into consideration their needs and circumstances.

As a facilitator, you are to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners’ progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

of Software in Digital Painting

and Graphic Design.

Digital painting is an emerging art form in which traditional painting

techniques such as watercolor, oils, impasto, etc. are applied using digital
tools by means of computer, a graphics tablet and stylus, and software.

What’s In

Before we proceed, let us check first what you have learned from your
previous lesson.

What are the elements of arts?

What are the principles of design?

What is a digital painting and non-digital painting?

What Is It

Since we will be doing digital painting, we will be using computer

software.

Computer software is often called as software, it is a set of

instructions and is associated with documentations that tells a computer
what to do or how to perform a task. Technology covers all the various
software systems such as applications and the operating system, on the
computer.

3
• A Software is a computer instructions or data, anything that can be
stored electronically. MS word, Excel, PowerPoint, Spreadsheets, library
management system are some examples of a software.

Title Bar

It is a small strip that extends across the top of a window. It displays

the title of the window and typically includes the close, minimize, and
maximize buttons.

Menu Bar

Menu Bar has a horizontal bar, typically located at the top of the screen
below the title bar, containing drop-down menus. It has menu for the Paint
Button, too. Click the drop-down and you will see a detailed menu which
includes Properties, Paint, and Desktop Context setup.

The menu bar’s purpose is to supply the common housing for window -
or application -specific menus which provide access to such functions as
opening files, interacting with an application, or displaying help
documentation or manuals.

4
Clipboard (cut, copy, and paste)

A clipboard is a temporary storage area for data that the user wants to
copy from one place to another. Cut and paste is the command found in
clipboard.

Image

It let you resize, skew and rotate or flip. Click on Select and it will give you
options for selecting shapes which can be Rectangular or Free Form, while
Selection options can be selected all or Transparent.

Paint Window - is a simple program that allows users to create basic

graphic art on a computer.

Tools

Tools are graphics editing or painting program used to change the area
of the canvas or image by adding paint strokes or filling the areas with color.

5
Examples of tools: pencil, fill with color, text, eraser, color picker, and
magnifier

Brushes

Brushes have different lines and texture such as natural brush,

calligraphy brush1, calligraphy brush 2, airbrush, oil brush, crayon, marker,
natural pencil, and watercolor brush. This tool applies color to your work,
similar to the way a traditional paintbrush would apply paint on a canvas or
paper. The edges of the lines created when using the brush tend to be slightly
softer than that of the other tools, mimicking a real brush.

What brushes tool did you use? How are the brushes selected changed in
digital painting?

6
You have the influence over the brushes that are available from the
brush palette. You can make your mark by choosing the brushes and by using
a variety of strokes. You can customize or make your own brushes in digital.

Brush interaction with support (paper/canvas, etc.) determine whether

the brushstroke will be applied with a texture.

What are the brush tool element of the painting tool?

Brush tool is an element of the painting tool that allows you to select a
brush shape (square, circle, oval and so on) and also the thickness in pixels
you want to paint on your image with. As you move your cursor over the image

Shapes

Shapes includes oval, rectangular, rounded rectangular, polygon,

triangle, diamond, pentagon, hexagon, right arrow, left arrow, up arrow, down
arrow, four-point star, rounded rectangular callout, oval callout, cloud
callout, heart, and lightning.

Shapes includes oval, rectangular, rounded rectangular, polygon,

7
Size

To create thin and thick lines for your selected brushes or shapes.
.

Colors

These are color 1, color 2, color palettes, and edit color.

What is the use of computer software in making painting today?

Many kinds of computer software are available to get started with the
digital painting. It is recommended that you use Gimp, Photo Editor Open
Source (free wares!) for tablet PC and Paint (windows) for laptop/desktop PC.
Together, these programs have a wide array of tools and options that you can
manipulate to turn your work into a digitalized masterpiece.

Drawing your image is the first step. Scanning it into the computer is
the second. Step three is using a computer program to transform your work
by cropping, editing, enhancing, lightening, darkening, shading, adding color,
layering, styling, or just about any other editing graphic you can think of.

8
Software tools used in Digital Painting

The Dodge tool and the Burn tool lighten or darken areas of the image. These
tools are based on a traditional darkroom technique for regulating exposure
on specific areas of a print. Photographers hold back light to lighten an area
on the print (dodging) or increase the exposure to darken areas on a print
(burning).

Sponge tool – is a retouching tool used to alter the saturation of a portion of

an image.

Tool Control - enables you to select the colors that you need.

Tool bar- allows you to select draw or modify objects.

Command bar - contains the shortcuts to many of the item in Menu.

Menu bar- This contains majority of the settings.

Status bar - shows different kinds of information like the position of the
pointer and the current zoom level.

What I Have Learned

Remember this!

❖ MS Paint is a basic utility included in all Microsoft Windows. It is free,

easy, and versatile to use. It processes Windows bitmap files.
❖ Painting on MS Paint is done by dragging the mouse or stylus then
clicking on different types of pencil or line, brush or pens, shapes, and
colors. Whichever version of MS paint is used, being familiar with its
features is important for easy painting.
❖ Arts elements and principle still apply even in the use of digital
technologies.
❖ Computer Software is set of instruction and its associated
documentations that tells a computer what to do or how to perform a
task.
❖ Paint Window is a simple program that allows users to create basic
graphic art on a computer.
❖ Title bar is a horizontal bar located at the top of a window in a GUI. It
displays the title of the software, name of the current document, or
other text identifying the contents of that window.
❖ Menu bar has a horizontal bar, typically located at the top of the screen
below the title bar, containing drop-down menus and it contains
majority of the settings.
❖ Clipboard is a temporary storage area for data that the user wants to
copy from one place to another.
❖ Status bar - shows different kinds of information like the position of
the pointer and the current zoom level.
