Let Us Learn
Health serves as the learners pathway to a decent and healthy way
of life. It enables them to acquire essential knowledge and understanding of
the promotion of good nutrition and prevention and control of disease. Each
effects of health-risk behaviors in view of promoting healthy living.

Today we are going to discuss about Poor Environmental Sanitation at

the end of the lesson you are going to learn the following:

1. described diseases and disorders caused by poor environmental

Sanitation (H6EH-IIIa-1)

2. explains how poor environmental sanitation can negatively impact

the health of an individual (H6EH-IIIb-2)

Does it not bother you when you are in a dirty and messy place? Does
it not drive you crazy and mad over the poor sanitation of a place?

Whether you would admit or not,a place that is untidy and not properly
sanitized affects us b0th mentally and physically.

With the rapid growth of population and excessive urbanization,

environmental health of the country is threatened, affecting mainly the
people. Environmental problems like overpopulation, pollution, improper
waste disposal, destructive human activities such as deforestation, fish kill,
kaingin, muro-ami, dynamite fishing, and uncontrolled toxic chemicals
released on waters and air will surely threaten the health of the people in a
community.

Lifestyle and the environment are factors that influence the acquisition
and development of noncommunicable disease. These factors include age,
sex, hereditary, exposure to pollution, and unhealthy habits, such as
smoking, poor diet, and physical activity or sedentary lifestyle.

The World health Organization (WHO) has identified five important risk
factors from among the top ten leading risks to health causes of
noncommunicable diseases. These are raised blood pressure, increased
cholesterol level, tobacco use, alcohol abuse, and being overweight.

Improve diet and increased physical activity have been shown to help
control the prevalence of noncommunicable diseases.

Let Us Try
Instruction: Fill in the blanks. Put check (√) if the diseases mentioned
is caused by poor sanitation and cross (X) if it is not.

____ 1. Diarrhea ____ 6. Colds

____ 2. Typhoid ____ 7. Allergy
____ 3. Asthma ____ 8. Migraine
____ 4. Chickenpox ____ 9. Fever
____ 5. Cholera ____ 10. Cancer

Let Us Study

What are some of the disease and disorders caused by poor environmental
sanitation :

1. Allergy- an abnormal reaction of the body’s immune system to substance or

particular that do not affect others who are not sensitive to these substance. They
often trigger sneezing, wheezing, coughing, and itching. Allergies have been linked
to a variety of common and serious chronic respiratory illness, such as sinusitis and
asthma.

2. Asthma-a chronic disease characterized by recurrent attacks of breathless and

wheezing, which vary from person to person.Symptoms may occur several times in a
day or week.

3. Cardiovascular disease- a class of disease of the heart or blood vessels

(arteries, capillaries, and veins).

4. Cancer- a large group of disease characterized by uncontrolled growth of

abnormal cells in almost any organ of the body. The terms used to refer abnormal
cells are malignant tumors and neoplasms. These abnormal cells can invade
adjoining parts of the body. This condition or process of spreading of cancer cells is
known as metastasis. Metastasis is the major cause of death among cancer
patients.Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide.

5. Diabetes- a chronic disease that develops when the pancreas does not produce
enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin. Insulin is a
hormone that decreases blood sugar level. Hyperglycemia or abnormally high blood
sugar is a common effect and sign of uncontrolled diabetes. Over time, leads to
serious damage to many of the body organs, nerves, and blood vessels.

2
Let Us Practice
Instruction: Each item shows someone who got sick because of the poor sanitation.
Draw a square (□) if there is a relationship between the poor sanitation and the
sickness and a circle (○) if they have no relationship.

________ 2. Armando’s asthma was triggered by the web in the classroom.

plates on the sink.

Let Us Remember

Health for Life

Environment is the circumstances, objects, or conditions by which one is
surrounded. It is the complex of physical, chemical, and biotic factors (such as climate,
soil, and living things) that act upon an organism or an ecological community and
ultimately determine its form and survival.

3
Sanitation is the act or process of making sanitary. It is the promotion of hygiene
and prevention of disease by maintenance of sanitary conditions (as by removal of
sewage and trash) - often used attributively.
Lifestyle and environment-related diseases are
