How might the Renaissance shape European art, thought, and religion?

1. What is the time period of the Renaissance and Reformation?- The Renaissance was a fervent period of
European cultural, artistic, political and economic “rebirth” following the Middle Ages. Generally
described as taking place from the 14th century to the 17th century, the Renaissance promoted
the rediscovery of classical philosophy, literature and art.
2. Why might a copy of the Gutenberg bible be significant?- The Gutenberg Bible (also known as the 42-line Bible,
the Mazarin Bible or the B42) was among the earliest major books printed using mass-produced movable metal type
in Europe

3. Explain how Michaelangelo created the painting of the Sistine Chapel?- fresco technique

Like many other Italian Renaissance painters, he used a fresco technique, meaning he applied washes of paint to wet
plaster. In order to create an illusion of depth, Michelangelo would scrape off some of the wet medium prior to
panting

2. Where can you find Michaelangelo’s David today?- Michelangelo's David is currently in the Accademia Gallery of
Florence (Galleria dell'Accademia di Firenze) in Florence and is definitely a goal you can not miss on your visit to this
wonderful city

2. Why might the renaissance have started in Italy?- The Renaissance was a rebirth of ancient Greek and Roman
thinking and styles, and both the Roman and Greek civilizations were Mediterranean cultures, as is Italy. The best
single reason for Italy as the birthplace of the Renaissance was the concentration of wealth, power, and intellect in
the Church.

1. Why was perspective necessary for artists to achieve realism in paintings?- Renaissance artists were largely
concerned with painting realistic scenes, and linear perspective gave them a reliable method to accomplish this
realism, which helped make their paintings all the more captivating!

1. Who was Machiavelli?- Niccolò Machiavelli was an Italian Renaissance political philosopher and
statesman and secretary of the Florentine republic. His most famous work, The Prince (1532),
brought him a reputation as an atheist and an immoral cynic.

1. How might the printing press be such an important innovation?- The printing press allows us to share large
amounts of information quickly and in huge numbers. In fact, the printing press is so significant that it has come to
be known as one of the most important inventions of our time. It drastically changed the way society evolved.

1. What is realism and how is it depicted in Norther European artists?- As such, realism in its broad sense has
comprised many artistic currents in different civilizations. In the visual arts, for example, realism can be found in
ancient Hellenistic Greek sculptures accurately portraying boxers and decrepit old women.

1. Why might people from all social classes enjoy Shakespeare’s plays? Was there still class distinction? How so?- In
his own time, Shakespeare had to make his plays appeal to both the upper and lower classes. He accomplished this
through his use of more "dirty" humor and puns on words to appeal to the lower class, and he appealed to the
upper class through the carefully structured plots and the themes he used.
