Model “L” Sliding Sleeve And Model “L” Sliding Sleeve
For Severe Service
Product Family Nos. H81004 and H81005
Introduction
The Model “L” Sliding Sleeve is a downhole
sleeve valve used to establish communication,
when desired, between the tubing and annulus.
Selective and/or Top No-Go Locking Devices are
available for use with the Sleeve. It has seal bores
above and below the ports, and a Top No-Go
Shoulder and Locking Groove. The shoulder and
groove are utilized in Top No-Go landing and the
groove only in Selective locating and landing. The
“L” Sliding Sleeve locates, seals and retains Flow
Control Accessories that have either Top No-Go or
Selective Locks.
Refer to Flow Control Systems units for those
Accessories which may be landed in the upper
bore only of the “L” Sliding Sleeve.
Important:
When any Accessory is landed in a Model
“L” Sliding Sleeve using a Model “E” Running
Tool, Product Family No. H81117, the Running
Tool must be dressed so that only the down-
facing Locks open during the initial setting op-
eration. When the Accessory is run on a “C-1”
Running Tool, Product Family No. H81106, with
Dogs trailing, the Running Tool must be
dressed to locate on the Sliding Sleeve bore.

Shifting Tools
1. Standard Shifting Tools - May be used to shift
most sizes of Model “L” Sliding Sleeves. (See
Shifting Tool Chart on Page 6.)
2. Model “D-2” Shifting Tool, Product Family No.
H81072 specifically designed for the Model “L”
Sliding Sleeve to provide safe, selective, and
controlled shifting; locates, shifts, and indicates
any number of a series of “L” Sleeves (same
size) in a tubing string in any order without dis-
turbing the others. In conjunction with the “L”
Sleeve, the “D-2” Shifting Tool is designed to
open the Closing Sleeve without seal damage
or being blown up the hole, even under extreme
differential pressure from the annulus.
Features/Benefits
• Closing Sleeve Seals - Upper seals are
designed to accommodate elastomer swell, to
prevent pressure trapping, and to require only a
moderate and consistent shifting force
• Lower seals have all the above features, and in
addition are integrally mold-bonded to the
Closing Sleeve. This, plus their dynamically
determined shape, permits the “L” Sliding
Sleeve to be opened against severe differential
from either the casing or tubing side without
seal damage
“L” Sliding Sleeve And “L” Sliding
Sleeve For Severe Service
• Collet Lock on Closing Sleeve - Provides a
uniform shifting force requirement. Immune to
solids
• Closing Sleeve Skirt - Provides insurance
against being blown up the hole during an
opening operation. This is accomplished by
placing the flow path above the engaging
members of any shifting tool
• Seal Bores - Contoured and polished to pass
Chevron Packing without damage
• Integral Locking Groove
• Recourse - If, for some reason, the Closing
Sleeve cannot be closed, the ports can still be
blanked off with an appropriate Accessory
• Versatility - Depending upon the bore size used
and the tubing size, the “L” Sliding Sleeve will
function in Top No-Go and/or Selective
systems. In the closed position it can be
considered and used as a Non-Ported Seating
Nipple. In the open position it can be
considered and used as a Ported Seating
Nipple
• Severe - Service Chevron Packing-Standard
on all Accessories
• Material Selection - Equipped with Upper and
Lower Subs of alloy steel (as Product Family
No. H81004), or of stainless steel (as Product
Family No. H81005). Both materials are heat-
treated based on National Association of
Corrosion Engineers Specifications. (Hardness
is 22 Rc Max). The Housings, coated to prevent
corrosion, provide a smooth surface for the

CAUTION Assembly and Disassembly

Minimum makeup torque for the two straight
threads should meet the API
requirements for the tubing size and weight
required for each Sliding Sleeve.
Under no circumstances should this torque be
transmitted through the Sleeve Housing
as this may cause distortion in the area of the
communication ports.
Cold Weather Surface Testing
When making surface tests in cold weather, a
false leakage may be indicated due to the low tem-
perature of the seals. At low temperatures (not en-
countered in the hole) the seals lose their elastic
ability and therefore are unable to follow the bal-
looning effect of the housing during high pressure
surface testing. To prevent a false leakage indica-
tion, heat the Sleeve prior to testing, being careful
not to damage the seals.

1. The Closing Sleeve is always assembled or dis-
assembled via the lower end of the Housing.
2. Upper and Lower Subs are bumped up the
same as equivalent size tubing joints.
3. Lubrication: Apply Baker Downhole Grease No.
1, Product Family No. H49921, on Housing ID
and Closing Sleeve OD during assembly. Coat
all threads with Bakerseal, Product Family No.
H89920.
CAUTION
Minimum makeup torque for the two straight
threads should meet the API requirements for
the basic tubing size of each Sliding Sleeve.
