CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents the different essential elements:

the introduction, which contains the rationale (an

explanation of the reasons for the conduct of the research);

the statement of the problem; the significance of the study

which enumerates the beneficiaries of the study and

corresponding benefits each will receive; and lastly; the

definition of terms.

In this 21st Century era, with the emergence of ICT and

Web 2.0 technologies, libraries have a new, more dynamic

role in the knowledge society and as the individual is

affected by ICT, in the same way, the individual can also

influence the technology. Libraries began to recognize the

presence of the web experience and utilize such services in

order to create a new environment for libraries where user

interaction plays a basic role. This proposed project would

like to reiterate the application of modern digital

monitoring procedure in libraries through an image

processing device.

Face recognition is a category of biometric software

that maps an individual’s facial features mathematically and

2

stores the data as a face print. The software uses deep

learning algorithms to compare a live capture or digital

image to the stored face print in order to verify an

individual’s identity. There are several reasons for recent

increased interest in face recognition, including rising

public concern for security, the need for identity

verification in the digital world, face analysis and

modelling techniques in multimedia data management and

computer entertainment.

Facial recognition has been gaining prominence in

recent times, owing to the benefits it offers over

traditional surveillance techniques, like biometrics. The

face recognition market was valued at USD 5.07 billion in

2019 and is expected to reach a value of USD 10.19 billion

by 2025 (Mordor Intelligence, 2019). Mobile phones and

gadgets nowadays also offers facial recognition technology.

This area of interest was chosen because of the advancements

of the academic society brought by the globalization and to

motivate 21st century learners to be innovative and tech-

driven.

This research entitled “Viewpoints of Grade 12 STEM

Students of Garcia College of Technology on the Application

of Face Recognition Technology in Monitoring the Library

3

Attendance” specifically aims to improve the usual way of

attendance of the library by using face recognition device,

make the recording of attendance easier and more accurately

and saves time and can be further implemented into other

academic facilities other than the library.

This study therefore, attempts to find out the

viewpoints of Grade 12 STEM students of Garcia College of

Technology on the application of face recognition technology

in monitoring the library attendance and at the same time,

to assess the possible results of the technology whether it

is effective or not.

Setting of the Problem

The locale of the study entitled “Viewpoints of Grade

12 STEM Students of Garcia College of Technology on the

Application of Face Recognition Technology in Monitoring the

Library Attendance” is Garcia College of Technology. It is

one of the prestigious schools in Kalibo, Aklan and is home

of brilliant students most likely aspiring to be future

accountants and engineers. Moreover, the school has the

largest number of enrolled senior high school students and

one of the top performing schools in the province of Aklan.

4

Objectives of the Study

This study aims to determine the viewpoints of Grade 12

STEM students of Garcia College of Technology on the

application of face recognition technology in monitoring the

library attendance.

Specifically, this study attempts to answer the

following questions:

1. What is the profile of the respondents in terms of sex?

2. What are the viewpoints of grade 12 STEM students of

Garcia College of Technology on the application of face

recognition technology in monitoring the library

attendance?

3. How will the application of face recognition technology

affect the current attendance monitoring system of the

school library?

Conceptual Framework

This framework guides the researcher in synthesizing

the different theories used in formulating a new one. This

is a diagrammatic presentation of the study used to visually

summarize the whole study.

Theoretical Framework

The ability to process the visual information conveyed

by the human face is an important skill in normal social

interactions. The information-processing model of face

recognition developed by Bruce and Young (1986) as cited in

the study of McCarthy and Warrington (1990) in Cognitive

Neuropsychology, which incorporates much of the evidence

from neuropsychological and normal studies of face

processing. In detail, Bruce and Young’s model states that

structural encoding stage begins when the brain identifies

something that looks like a human face, then a mental

representation of the face is produced. Alongside, this

basic processing takes place to decide if you are male,

6

female, old, young, etc. the face is then compared to the

face recognition units which include every we have stored.

If there is a match, we access the person’s identity nodes

which store personal information about the person’s name

then we can retrieve the person’s name (Cohen et. al.,

2012). The Thatcher effect also supports the idea of Bruce

and Young which is first created and explicitly described by

Thompson (1980), where participants instantly perceive an

upright face with inverted eyes and mouth as grotesque, but

fail to do so when the same face is inverted.

Scope and Delimitation

The general intent of this study is to know the

viewpoints of grade 12 STEM students of Garcia College of

Technology on the application of face recognition technology

in monitoring the library attendance.

This study will mainly identify and assess the

perspective of students on the application of the face

recognition in monitoring their library attendance. Also,

this study yearns to find out how the application of face

recognition device affects the current library system. The

respondents of the study are composed of two hundred thirty-

three (233) randomly selected Grade 12 STEM students

7

enrolled for the second semester of the school year 2019-

2020.

Significance of the Study

The results of the study will be beneficial to the

following: students, teachers, librarians, administration

and future researchers.

Administration. The research can also be a source of ideas

and concepts to the administrators adopt this kind of

biometric to other academic facilities aside from the

library for surveillance and attendance purposes. They can

also apply this technology to strengthen the security and

monitor the individuals who are entering inside the school

premises.

Librarians. This research will be beneficial to them as it

will lessen the effort and time required for them to monitor

the attendance of the students in the library. This device

will make their work lightweight and effortless as the

computer itself will manage to detect, analyze, and record

the individuals entering inside the library.

Students. This study will be beneficial to them in terms of

the convenience brought by this face recognition technology

8

that makes the signing in and out for attendance more easy

and hassle-free. This research will also encourage them to

be innovative and to discover new things about the power of

science and technology that makes life at ease.

Teachers. This study will also give them a convenient and

easy way to access the library by reducing the amount of

work or time in signing in and out in the log sheet

regularly. This may also help them to introduce the idea of

these technology to the students to learn it and inspire

them to become innovative and to do so.

Future Researchers. The research can be a source of another

study or can be replicated using additional variables in

another locale or setting or with different respondents. The

results will be a possible research literature for their own

study. Enrichment or validation of the study of the same

variables as recommended for them to be able to reinforce

the
