The introduction of social media on an easily accessible and usable scale had effects
that would change the entire world within only a few short years. Those effects, both good and
bad, are still present nearly 20 years after social media had its beginnings. Social media affects
both the worldwide community, as well as communities as small as neighborhoods or clubs.
The positive outcomes of social media are plentiful; the overarching theme being that
people can connect with one another no matter their locations. All types of connections can be
made this way, whether it be a new friendship, or a new employee for a business, social media
can introduce all sorts of people. People searching for employment are able to create a good
image for themselves while getting their name out to potential employers. Besides introducing
people, social media also does a very good job of spreading information. People can keep up
with current world events and issues through the use of social media. This produces a more
informed society who are capable of making more informed decisions about their actions and
how they will have a greater impact on the world than may seem at surface level. Local
communities such as neighborhoods or clubs can use social media to help one another with
local projects or gatherings. Companies can promote their products and services to potential
customer bases through social media.
Although it is hard to imagine a world without social media, some argue it would be the
better world. This is due to the negative effects that social media has had on the world and
people's lives. Social media can cause people to seek unrealistic expectations, usually
monetarily or physically. This can cause people to feel like they aren’t good enough. With the
ease of making online connections, making connections face to face can seem like a bother; the
loss of personal, real relationships is another negative side effect of the introduction of social
media. Social media is also a vessel of cyberbullying, which can have very poor side effects on
a child or teenager's life.
In conclusion, the outcomes of social media are twofold, one side being positive
connections and the other being negative uses and side effects of the invention. The world will
never be the same as it was before the introduction of social media. It is easier now than ever to
know all about your friends, families, and even strangers day to day lives, and whether that is
used for bad or for good, is ultimately up to the individual.
